It’s been over two years since Game of Thrones drew to a close on HBO with the eighth and final season proving to be the least popular in the fantasy drama’s history. The reception to GOT season eight has widely been recognised as a negative one as the likes of Cersei Lannister (played by Lena Headey), Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) all perished in rather underwhelming circumstances while the endings for Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and the Stark family left plenty to be desired. Nevertheless, the backlash didn’t stop HBO from moving forward with prequel series House of the Dragon which now has its first trailer.

House of the Dragon explores the story of the Targaryens two centuries prior to Game of Thrones.

Much like the flagship series, House of the Dragon boasts a star-studded cast with the likes of Milly Alcock, Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Rhys Ifans, Graham McTavish and Eve Best in the line-up.

And in the first promo from HBO, fans get their first taste of the bloodshed, betrayal, heartache and, of course, dragons that can be expected from the spin-off.

However, many loyal Game of Thrones fans remain unconvinced that House of Dragon can salvage the reputation of the George RR Martin-created fantasy thanks to the “travesty” of season eight.

Reacting to the trailer on Twitter, Camille said of the House of Dragon promo: “I’m excited but I don’t know if I can watch this without still being devastated by the travesty of the end of GOT lol.” (Sic)

Twitter user @blue_adieu went as far as to say the final series diminished their fondness completely: “Season 8 killed my interest in this series.”

Marc echoed the sentiment, raging: “REMAKE SEASON 8 FIRST. U RUINED ALL THE HOUSES.”

While @tat_targaryen also vowed to turn off: “And still think that we need this s**t after what you’ve done to our queen?”

Luckily for GOT bosses, however, there was some positive reception from those still reeling from the disappointment of season eight.

Thomas waded into the debate: “May have to finally finish the first series. Hopefully this will be better than season 8.”

Patrick pleaded: “Please don’t mess up with that one like you did in game of thrones season 8.”

And Jack added: “We can all agree GOT S8 was a disaster but I’m so pumped for this!! #HouseOfTheDragon.”

And for some, the devastation of Game of Thrones season eight played no part in their mind after catching their first glimpse of House of the Dragon.

Twitter user @sagevalentine simply put: “This looks so good! I’m so excited!!!”

Usama concurred: “Best TV show of 2022. Absolutely no competition.”

While Daniel commented: “Yeahhh, it looks so great. Finally we have something to watch and see how big is it, and now I know that it’s so much big. I’m so excited for this showw.” (Sic).

While the trailer may finally be here, fans still have a little while to wait until the prequel GOT drama gets underway.

HBO confirmed House of the Dragon will arrive on HBO Max in 2022 – although kept quiet about an exact month.

For those in the UK, it’s still unknown when or who will air the new series, although given Sky Atlantic aired Game of Thrones, it’s a safe bet the network will pick up the series once again.

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available to stream on NOW now.
