HBO’s fantasy drama may have come to an end in 2019, but there continue to be surprising revelations about Game of Thrones unveiled frequently. This time actress Hannah Waddingham disclosed which infamous prop she was allowed to keep from her time as Septa Unella.
In an interview on the Clarkson Show, Hannah unveiled a major revelation which surprised the millions of Game of Thrones fans.
She was able to take a keepsake from the show to remember her time on set and arguably one of the most memorable moments from the series.
Hannah admitted to keeping the shame bell which made its iconic debut in a key scene during season five’s finale.
Fans will remember, as Septa Unella (played by Hannah Waddingham) followed the naked Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) through Kings Landing, shouting “shame!”
After making the confession, host Kelly Clarkson laughed as she stated: “That’s kind of messed up.”
“That’s when you know your character is really dead when they give you the hero thing of your character, they’re like ‘And thank you very much and goodbye,’” Hannah responded.
The actress was on the Clarkson show to promote season two of the critically acclaimed series Ted Lasso.
As she reflected on her successful career, she exclaimed: “I feel like I’ve been very lucky that these huge shows have just gone ‘come in and do this,’ it’s just intense.”
The shame bell was used during Cersei’s walk of atonement, where she was punished after confessing to her many sins, which included adultery with her cousin Lancel Lannister (Eugene Simon).
As a confessed sinner, she had to face punishment where she was stripped naked and her head was shaved.
Accompanied by Septa Unella, Cersei had to walk the distance from Great Sept of Baelor to the Red Keep in the eyes of the public she once ruled.
As the crowd jeered at her and threw objects such as food, Unella shouted out “shame” while she continuously rang the bell, to get the attention of the public.
This scene was a shock for viewers who struggled to comprehend the severity of the punishment.
Cersei’s walk became such a popularized moment in pop culture, a Shame Bell app was even created so fans could create their own moment.
Eventually, Cersei was able to get revenge on Unella by leaving her a prisoner with The Mountain where she was sexually assaulted.
However, it didn’t stop there, as the disgraced Queen also waterboarded Unella with wine
Hannah opened up about the “traumatic” scene and called it the “worst day of her life,” as it left her with claustrophobia and a fear of water, which she sought professional help for.
The actress has since stepped away from HBO and joined the cast of Apple TV’s Ted Lasso where she plays Rebecca Welton.
Ahead of the show’s second season premiere, Hannah won a 2021 Emmy Award for Outstanding Support Actress in a Comedy Series.
