Dr Hilary Jones left Susanna Reid confused on Tuesday morning as he suffered a blunder while discussing the coronavirus vaccine.

The 68 year old butted into 50 year old Susanna's conversation live on Good Morning Britain as she discussed how you need to isolate if you come into contact with somebody who has been exposed by the virus – even if you have received two doses of the vaccine.

Speaking to journalist Kevin Maguire, who is a regular on the ITV breakfast show, she said: "It seems to be one of the decisions that the government is grappling with at the moment.

"Whether if you've been double jabbed and you are in contact with a Covid case, whether you would then be free not to isolate."

Before Kevin had the chance to respond, GP Hilary said: "That's the PHE (Public Health England) guidelines at the moment.

"A week after the second dose of Pfizer, a week after the Janssen and 14 days after Moderna and AstraZeneca, you don't need to self-isolate if you come into contact with somebody who has tested positive."

After a short silence, Susanna said: "That, sorry, that's…," before guest Isabel Oakeshott said: "That's news to me."

Susanna added: "I think that's news to all of us!," as co-host Adil Ray asked: "What?"

Dr Hilary replied: "I think that's the case," with Susanna bluntly hitting back: "I don't think that is the case because, currently, we are being told to isolate."

Hilary repeated:"If you've been doubled jabbed with those vaccines, you don't have to isolate."

Adil then stepped in to ask: "Is that a suggestion from PHE at the moment? Are they talking about it? I don't think that is the current guidance."

Later in the show, Hilary clarified his comments, admitting he had made a mistake when it comes to the current guidelines.

He said: "I stand corrected on what we said earlier. At the moment, if you've been double jabbed you still need to isolate if you've been exposed to somebody who has tested positive.

"I think that will change because all the data show that within seven days of having Pfizer, 14 days after having Moderna and Janssen, and 15 days of AstraZeneca, in the future, it's very likely that your risk of picking up Covid is minimal so you probably won't have to self-isolate, but you do at the moment."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
