The BBC gameshow, which debuted at the end of February, sees contestants attempting to win a jackpot of up £100,000 by balancing stacks of bars on a board and answering a series of questions. Players pick a category and provide as many answers as the stack requires, giving them 60 seconds to answer and balance.

The BBC may be forced to axe the series though, with low ratings dropping each week.

The first episode attracted 2.9 million viewers as they tuned in to watch chef Gordon Ramsay take on a game show presenting role.

But after only to days, ratings dropped to 1.5 million, leaving the show with an uncertain future.

A source said: “Bank Balance has been an unmitigated disaster. Gordon is having a nightmare that’s worse than anything he’s dealt with in the kitchen.

“His attempt at a new career has fallen flat.”

“The top brass at the BBC are already saying they don’t know if they want to commit to a second series. Its future is hanging in the balance,” a source told the Daily Star.

They added the BBC “splashed the cash” to try and win over viewers but it quickly dropped in popularity.

It’s believed the viewing figures are “well below the average” for the prime time BBC One slot.

No official decisions have been made yet, but the series has seen many take to Twitter to give their views.

One said: “People said The Wheel was confusing. I’m a gameshow connoisseur and this is baffling me that I’ve started focusing on the pretty colours instead #BankBalance.”

Others also criticised the premise of the show for being confusing, with another writing: “Gordon running through how the game #GordonRamsaysBankBalance works made me think of Joey and Bambookzled in @FriendsTV. Far too confusing #BankBalance.”

A third said: “What is going on on this #BankBalance show? It feels like a pile of ideas squashed together and just feels confusing and isn’t engaging me

“Not helped by the contestants being a bit full-on; Gordon Ramsay not too bad as a host.”

Another viewer said the show has potential, adding: “#BankBalance could be so good! But far too much talking and not enough questions – get it moving faster – the pacing is terrible!
“And for the love god simplify it so people actually win sometimes! It has potential Gordon.”

But some have been enjoying the show, with one viewer tweeting to say: “I’ve never seen the show before today and I love it But… Why are they inside a Tardis? #BankBalance.”

Another said: “Love #BankBalance it’s very funny.”

But with low ratings, could the show now be off screens for good?

Gordon Ramsey’s Bank Balance is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
