Gorka Marquez addresses Strictly exit rumours after crushing defeat with Helen

Strictly fans spot Gorka's 'unimpressed' look at Hamza

Strictly Come Dancing star Gorka Marquez has addressed why he looked so disappointed about the result of the 2022 final after coming runner-up on the BBC One show.

Speaking on the Show On The Road podcast with host Alex Legouix, Gorka addressed losing out on the Glitterball Trophy with his celebrity partner Helen Skelton.

Gorka confirmed he is still taking part in this year’s series “despite rumours he might not be”.

He explained why fans thought he would not be returning to the programme, adding: “I think because I didn’t win and I wanted to win it, and the reaction I had when I didn’t win it, because you know what, I thought we were going to win it just at that moment because of the audience in the room…

“When you make the final and you have been in the dance-off you think, OK you don’t get the votes from the audience and it’s difficult.

“But when you make it to the final without being in the dance-off, you feel like you have the support of the audience and feel like we could win it.”

Gorka described last year’s winner Hamza Yassin as “incredible” and the Spanish dancer insisted he was happy for the cameraman who took home the crown with his professional partner Jowita Przystał.

“My reaction to it was just the reaction of someone who cares and loves the show and wanted to win for my celebrity,” Gorka explained.

“And that is why I was upset, and I think I had the right to be upset.”

Strictly Come Dancing – The Professionals Tour is hitting the road once again in May 2024, with a star-studded line-up. Dianne Buswell, Graziano Di Prima, Gorka Marquez and Nancy Xu are just a few of the names hitting cities around the country, including London, Cardiff, Liverpool and Brighton to name just a few.

He added: “That was my reaction but I will never leave the show, I love the show, it’s like the best show in telly and the best job I could dream for.”

Gorka joined Strictly Come Dancing in 2016 where he met his fiance Gemma Atkinson the following year, despite the pair not being partnered together on the show.

Elsewhere in the interview, Gorka, who shares a son and daughter with former Emmerdale actress Gemma, said: “If I can tell a story through a dance routine and make people feel something, for me, that’s my job done.

“Put it this way, to win Strictly isn’t going to make me more money or be more happy, I’m happy just because I get to dance and I want to be an example for my daughter.

“I don’t want her to think if she doesn’t win then it’s not good. To be able to do what she loves to do should be enough.”

His daughter Mia was born in 2019 and his son Thiago Thomas was welcomed to the world on July 17.

Taking to her Instagram, Gemma shared: “Little man is here! He arrived safe and sound and he’s utterly wonderful.”

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One later this year on a date yet to be announced.
