Great Expectations viewers 'give up' on 'dreadful' series as they rage that BBC bosses 'should be sacked' for adaptation | The Sun

VIEWERS of Great Expectations say they have given up on the series for good after a slew of negative reviews and comments.

It seems that great things might not come to those who wait after all as the latest episode of the BBC's adaptation of the classic Dickens story appeared to be the last straw for viewers, with many saying they would not continue watching the show.

Furious fans have lashed out at the waste of time as they insisted they had turned off.

Many also called out the BBC and demanded that bosses be 'sacked' for 'wasting' taxpayers money on the creation of the series.

Twitter was left awash with comments from disgruntled fans.

One wrote: This #GreatExpectations seems to have nothing to do with Dickens and everything about the BBC's far left agenda."

Fans were recently left unimpressed over a raunchy scene that was added to the show despite not being in the book.

It was blasted for its spanking scene as a naked Mr Pumblechook (played by Matt Berry) was whipped by housewife-turned-dominatrix Mrs Gargery (played by Hayley Squires.)

This comes after screenwriter Steven Knight, famed for Peaky Blinders, has sexed up the tale in a nod to topics he feels the author hinted at but couldn't explore in 19th century Britain.

In the scene, Mrs Gargery yelled: "Come upstairs now" as she removed her wedding ring, grabbed a whip and asked: "Are you ready?"

"You know what's coming don't you? Turn around," she said before proceeding to strike a naked Matt Berry ten times as he was bent over her bed.

Steven said he tried to "imagine if Dickens was writing the story now and had the freedom to go to those darker places' and asked: 'What would he do?'"
