MasterChef: Gregg ‘uncomfortable’ with ‘undercooked chicken’
A new series of MasterChef returned to the BBC with nine home cooks preparing their family favourite dish to try and win a coveted apron and a place in the second round of the competition. However, when trying out one chicken dish, Gregg Wallace refused to eat the meat as it made him “uncomfortable”.
Woei was told he had five minutes to finish his dish before it was to be presented to John and Gregg.
“Under control, don’t worry,” he told the floor manager. “The sauce is done.
“Hopefully it doesn’t blow John and Gregg away with the heat.”
As Woei put the finishing touches to his dish, he explained each of the elements, which included rice with butterfly pea flower water, which added a blue colour.
He then rushed two plates of chicken marinated in turmeric, served with a tomato and chilli sauce, and blue basmati rice with tempura curry leaves to the judges.
John had some praise for Woei, commenting: “I love that sauce. Rich and buttery, sweet with tomato and nice chilli heat running through the back of it.
“The thing with the curry leaf, it’s nice and crispy but because they are curry leaves, they stay quite greasy.”
Moving on to Gregg, he admitted, he liked the idea of the food but was unable to eat the chicken.
“Your rice is wonderful, it’s really light and it’s really fluffy,” he commented.
“I have issues with this chicken. there’s a pink tinge on the insides of my bits of chicken, which are putting me off.
“They’re undercooked. Not all of it but enough to make me uncomfortable.”
Speaking after receiving his critique, Woei was emotional as he explained; “A lot of stress in there so I’m glad it’s all done.

“You have to learn how to take criticism as well. Resilience is the most important part of life.”
Despite making Gregg uncomfortable with his chicken, Woei was later told he had impressed the judges enough to win a coveted MasterChef apron and hi place in the next stage of the competition.
He was one of four to win an early place in the next round but can he keep impressing John and Gregg?
Masterchef continues Tuesday on BBC One at 9pm
