Grey’s Anatomy fans feared the ABC series would be ending after season 17 as past stars such as Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd and TR Knight’s George O’Malley returned for the dream beach sequence. So it came as a pleasant surprise when it was announced the medical drama would be back for an 18th outing. Now, even more of the show’s past cast is returning for the latest lot of episodes.
Which fan-favourites will be returning to Grey’s Anatomy?
Ellis Grey – Kate Burton
Earlier this year, it was confirmed Meredith Grey’s (played by Ellen Pompeo) emotionally abusive mum Ellis Grey would be back for season 18.
She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and died of a heart attack in season three but actress Kate Burton continued to pop up every so often in flashback scenes.
Burton hasn’t been seen in the drama since 2019 but how will Ellis’ story weave into this upcoming series?
Besides from Grey’s Anatomy, the 63-year-old has been in Charmed, Supergirl and Scandal.
Addison Montgomery – Kate Walsh
The iconic Dr Addison Montgomery will be back on our screens with actress Kate Walsh announcing her return on social media.
She tweeted: “Well, well, well, would you look who it is.
“That’s right, my loves, Dr. Addison Montgomery is coming back to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and I’m so excited to be home again joining Shonda [Rhimes], Ellen [Pompeo], and the rest of the incredible cast.
“Just wait until you see what she has in store for you.”
Addison was the estranged wife of Derek who started stirring the pot way back in the very first season.
Her and Meredith have never seen eye-to-eye, given both of their romantic involvement with McDreamy.
Actress Walsh will appear in multiple episodes in season 18 but her storyline has been kept under wraps.
Since leaving the medical drama, Walsh has starred in Private Practice, Bad Judge, 13 Reasons Why and The Umbrella Academy.

Megan Hunt – Abigail Spencer
The most recent casting announcement is for actress Abigail Spencer who is returning as Megan Hunt.
Appearing in season 14 and 15, Megan is the younger sister of Dr Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd).
She served with him in the army as a trauma surgeon, as well as Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) and Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson).
Megan lives in Los Angeles with her son Farouk, a Syrian refugee who she started taking care of when she was overseas.
Actress Spencer has been in Rebel, True Detective, Mad Men and Reprisal.
Grey’s Anatomy is the world’s longest-running medical series and fans are still loving the drama.
However, given how there have been numerous ex-cast members returning in both series 17 and 18, there is a chance it is coming to an end.
So will there be a season 19 of Grey’s Anatomy or will it be axed after 16 years?
Grey’s Anatomy season 18 starts on Thursday, September 30, on ABC.
