Joanne Thomson’s life off screen from Outlander role to Emmerdale boyfriend

We know her best for starring in the smash hit historical drama series Outlander, but Scottish sensation Joanne Thomson is so much more than just one role, with the talented actress already having had a wealth of accolades under her belt – including a role in the BAFTA award winning movie The Suffragettes, along with the BBC series The Victim.

Whether it’s writing pilots and co-founding the first online BAFTA New Talent Writer's Group, through to flexing her cinematic skills both in front of and behind the camera, it’s safe to say that Joanne is a woman of many talents.

But when she’s not busy working both in the UK and abroad, Joanne can mostly be found living a quiet life with her boyfriend, Emmerdale actor Lawrence Robb, who many fans will no doubt recognise for playing Mackenzie Boyd in the soap.

Here’s everything you need to know about Joanne’s exciting life off screen…

Early life

Joanne Thompson was born and raised in Scotland, and originally hails from Glasgow, which is also the home to her alma mater, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

It was here that Joanne formally trained in Acting, and secured a BA Acting in her craft while developing a flair for performance on both stage and screen.

Following her graduation, Joanne later went on to move to Los Angeles, where she was later selected as a BAFTA Los Angeles New Comer in 2021, a highly prestigious initiative that encourages cross-discipline work for British film and TV professionals across the pond.

As well as acting on screen, Joanne also developed a taste (and talent) for writing, and has often championed underrepresented voices, something which saw her make the BBC Writer’s Room Top 2% List, Olivia Colman’s South of the River & Sister’s Commendation List and even won WWFC’s LA Pilot Accelerator in association with Netflix & HBO!

Professional career

Joanne first made her screen debut back in 2014, when she starred in a short film entitled Doug & Steve’s Big Holy Adventure.

From here, a number of small roles continued to pad her CV, until she was given a recurring role as Iris Laird in the ITV mini series In Plain Sight, just two years later in 2016.

From here, Joanne’s acting career went from strength to strength, with roles in the BAFTA award winning TV movie The Suffragettes in 2018 and one year later in The Victim, where she once again bagged a recurring role, this time as Lisa Harvey.

One of Joanne’s most iconic roles however later came in 2022, when she followed in the footsteps of many of her fellow Scots, to star in Outlander, where she took on the role of widow Amy McCallum from season 6 onwards.

Alongside her screen career, Joanne has also made numerous appeared on stage including performances at the Royal Lyceum theatre and Bristol Old Vic, while also continuing to add to her impressive slate of directing and writing credits.

Emmerdale boyfriend

As well as knowing Joanne for her impressive work on screen, many fans will also no doubt know the star thanks to her connection to Emmerdale heart-throb Lawrence Robb.

Although it is unknown exactly when the couple first began dating, Lawrence made his first appearance on Joanne’s social media feed back in January 2018, with the star now a frequent fixture on her account as she documents her adventures around the world.

Over the years, the loved up couple have headed everywhere from California to Venice, Disneyland to Croatia!

In addition to their long term romance the couple also own two adorable Dachshunds, Peaches and Pip.
