Sex Pistols star John Lydon spoke to Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard about his wife Nora’s Alzheimer’s battle, his career and their marriage. The musician was close to tears as he sent a heartfelt message to Nora, who he revealed would watch a recording of the breakfast show. John vowed he wouldn’t abandon his wife after becoming her full time personal carer amid her battle with dementia.
Speaking of her Alzheimer’s, John detailed: “It’s come on really strong and really quick. You’re asked questions of course by the doctors, ‘When did the symptoms first start?’
“But I really don’t know as I told the last doctor, she’s always been able to lose her keys. Are these indicators?”
“You know I think that’s a really good point,” Susanna replied. “A lot of people around perhaps my age, 50, do start to worry, you do think, ‘Hang on, the fact I can’t find anything anymore or I’ve stopped remembering any names.”
John replied: “It’s a symptom of bigger holes in your brain to come.
“They lose the connections and they can’t verbalise what it is they feel sometimes, sometimes they can.
“Sometimes her memory is lethal. She can go back 20 years and remember in the greatest detail with complete accuracy. Now that’s fascinating.
“For me it’s a journey I have to travel and I’m not going to abandon her.”
Ben commented: “You chose to become her primary carer and it’s something you take great pride in.”
“I can still see her personality, it still exists, it’s just confused on how to exist. Never give up on people, they’re always there.”
John and Nora have been married for 45 years and the Sex Pistols star said the secret to their long-lasting romance was they weren’t afraid to argue.
“We rowed openly and willingly with the greatest of pleasure,” he smiled. “It’s really loose.
“You need to do that and let off the steam.”
As the interview came to an end, John looked down the camera and sang to his wife: “Tell Nora, I love her.”
Many of those watching John on Good Morning Britain were quick to comment on his interview, and praised his approach to caring.
“I was never into @lydonofficial musical genre but this morning he was a breath of fresh air,” one viewer posted.
“Loves his wife, had his say & wouldn’t let anyone talk over him. Wish there were more out there like you.”
Another added: “What a wonderful man, I admire people like him. My father died of Dementia 16 years ago and stroke’s, it’s hard to watch someone you love not know who you are etc. Lovely man brilliant husband Growing heart.”
A third continued: “Really good to see @lydonofficial in fine fettle sorry to hear about Nora but love is eternal as John is proving!”
Someone else posted: “Absolutely love him, speaks his mind, tells the truth.”
“Amazing man with a fantastic attitude. My mother has dementia and all he describes applies to her. Huge respect,” a fifth continued.
