John Whaite got Strictly call up in middle of supermarket and had to flee shop

Channel 4 presenter John Whaite revealed that he got his big call-up for Strictly Come Dancing whilst he was in the supermarket.

The Great British Bake Off winner is set to appear on the new series of the hit BBC One dancing staple – its 19th series – which is expected to air in Autumn this year.

The TV baker, who won the third series of Bake Off in 2012 and co-presents Channel 4 chat show Steph's Packed Lunch, will make history as part of the first ever same-sex male dancing couple on the show.

However, it seems like the star was taken by surprise when he got the famous phone call telling him he would be starring on the show.

Speaking on Packed Lunch to host Steph McGovern on Tuesday (7 September), John admitted he was strolling around the supermarket when he got the shock call.

In fact, he confessed that he had to sneak out of the shop with his partner Paul Atkins, presumably to avoid the huge news spreading to the public.

Steph asked John: "What was that call like, how did it work?"

John, 32, replied: "Well I got the call when I was in the supermarket on the frozen food aisle.

"So I had to whisper to Paul, I was like 'I'm gonna be on Strictly!' and he went 'Oh my god, let's get out of here!'"

John went on to explain that he and Paul drove home in silence as they didn't know how to process the massive news.

He went on: "And then we got in the car and drove home in silence because we didn't know how to process it like, I don't think we've still spoken about it very much because it's massive, isn't it?"

Discussing his living arrangements ahead of the show starting, he said that he's moving to London which will help him adjust to life on the show.

He also discussed making history on the show as part of the first ever same-sex male couple.

John said: "It's a massive honour, it really is.

"We've spoken about this before in terms of like sports people coming out and I think if I'd seen two lads or lasses dancing together on Saturday night TV and nobody made a fuss about it, I don't think I'd have grown up with quite so much shame for being gay.

"And I just hope that there are kids out there watching who don't even question it [their sexuality], who watch it [Strictly] and think 'I am who I am and I'm comfortable with that'."

He also let slip that he'll find out his dance partner tomorrow (Wednesday 8 September).
