Kate Chastain may have hung up her skort on Below Deck but it doesn’t mean she’s ready to rip weaves over lunch on Housewives.
Chastain is a Housewives loyalist with a specific affinity for The Real Housewives of New York City. But if she were to return to Bravo, it wouldn’t be in that capacity.
Kate Chastain loves to watch ‘Housewives’ not be on ‘Housewives’
Discretion Advised podcast hosts asked Chastain if she’d consider joining the cast of The Real Housewives of Miami since she now resides in South Florida. “I love Miami, I love that franchise,” she said. “I think they’re all really great. And interesting and funny and fresh. But being on a Housewives show, I’m not well practiced at just being on camera and maybe causing drama. I shy away from that.”
“I like a show that’s built around an occupation,” she continued. She added, “I like having the cameras on me,” she said. “It’s the work I don’t miss.”
She joked about her ‘Housewives’ tagline
In a 2020 interview, Chastain said she’d maybe consider a friend role on RHONY. At the time she was living in the city. “It’s pretty much like Below Deck. You get to drink and talk about the people on the show in confessionals without the work … and you don’t have to wear a uniform, [so] that sounds great,” she told US Weekly.
She even joked about her tagline. “My old tagline used to be: I may have a resting b**** face, but that’s the only part of me that’s ever resting,” she said. “But since I stopped yachting, I’m doing a lot of resting.”
Chastain recounted that Austen Kroll from Southern Charm thought she actually was a cast member on a fictitious Housewives show. “Austen and I had a little moment at BravoCon where he asked me what show I was on and I told him, Housewives of Thailand, and he was, like, ‘Really, seriously?’ [He] believed me,” she recalled. “Since then he had a good laugh about it, and he had a good sense of humor about it.”
Kate Chastain is still a fan
While Chastain isn’t interested in being a Housewife, she’s still a loyal fan. In fact, she stood by RHONY when fans dogged the last season. “I think RHONY is great this season,” she dished with Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “I love Bershan [Shaw] and Eboni [Williams]. They’re great additions.”
“I think that Ramona [Singer] is … herself as usual, but in new ways,” she added. “And Luann’s [de Lesseps] Christmas music video, I can’t wait to see how that turns out. I mean, I always love New York.”
While Chastain wasn’t giving up on RHONY, she definitely leaned into The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills this last season. “I’m also loving The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” she said. “Who expected it to be this good? No one! I mean if you told me a year ago that Beverly Hills would be the best franchise of 2021 I would not have believed you.”
Since leaving Below Deck, Chastain created the talk show Bravo’s Chat Room but left the show when the chemistry with a few of the co-hosts went south. “I was very involved in the creation of it,” she said. “I was very happy to be involved until I wasn’t anymore. And since it was a new show during a pandemic, it took a while for it to find its groove and figure out what kind of show it was.”
The series sputtered after her departure and is currently on hiatus.
