Law and Order SVU fans devastated as key player exits show

Bonus scene of Det. Muncy's Law and Order: SVU goodbye

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit has lost another series regular from the main team; Detective Grace Muncy (played by Molly Burnett).

After her appearances in Thursday’s SVU/Organized Crime crossover finale, the newcomer reportedly won’t be reprising her role when the show returns later this year, according to TV Line.

In the first episode, Muncy told Joe Velasco (Octavio Pisano) her boss Chief Tommy McGrath (Terry Serpico) was impressed with her work on a recent case and had offered her a promotion.

She apparently accepted the job off-screen, and later packed up her desk and left after a tearful goodbye with her partner.

Having only joined at the start of the current season, fans were less than thrilled with Muncy’s surprise exit, with many taking to Twitter to complain about the sudden revelation.

Jessica Taylor Hayes said: “Say what you want and agree or disagree on Gracy Muncy; either way, Molly Burnett deserved a much better send-off being an actual cast member.

“She should have went out better. If you disagree, just keep moving.”

@Nessa_Peaches asked: “Why spend the entire season developing Muncy like that just to send her off with nothing…? Seems cruel to me.”

@TheBrianC72 tagged Burnett and said: “So sad you are leaving @lawandordertv #SVU.

“Muncy had been my favourite new detective. Cannot wait to see what is next, Miss Burnett!”

@JoeWhitehead7 fumed: “Why does it seem like, in the last few seasons of #SVU, that the newbies just don’t stick around that long?

“I mean Stone, Kat, Garland, and now Muncy. I mean, what is this?”

Burnett’s exit also came in the same episode as the death of Jamie Whelan (Brent Antonello) and hot on the tails of Amanda Rollins’ (Kelli Giddish) departure – though the latter made a special comeback for the crossover.

“Jamie’s dead, Muncy’s leaving. I’m not really liking this episode,” Vaughn Ramdeen tweeted.

And @_monalisavito_ wrote: “I’m hella confused by the casting decisions going on at SVU.

“They spent half the season waxing poetic about Rollins and the other half force-feeding Muncy to us and now Molly is out and Kelli is.. back? Maybe? K.”

For fans who felt Muncy’s final scene wasn’t enough, an extended look at her farewell with Velasco was recently posted on Wolf Entertainment’s official Twitter page.

It’s currently unknown where Burnett will be headed now she’s wrapped up her short-lived stint on the popular crime procedural.

Her performance in the upcoming thriller film, New Me, is currently in post-production, and she also played a major role in the USA Network crime drama, Queen of the South.

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit airs Thursdays on NBC in the USA.
