Netflix subscribers clearly couldn’t wait for the return of Lucifer’s fifth season after the series came to a jaw-dropping cliffhanger ending last August. After rocketing to the top of the charts in May, the streaming service have confirmed the series drew in some dizzying viewer figures for the latest eight episodes.

Streaming giant Netflix have confirmed Lucifer was watched for a massive 1.3 billion minutes the week of season 5b’s release.

The viewing figures were recorded from the week commencing May 24th, meaning millions of viewers were already tuning in before the second half was released.

Lucifer already made it to the top spot of Netflix’s worldwide charts when the Biblical drama starring British lead Tom Ellis returned at the end of last month.

With just one more instalment on the way, the latest numbers have solidified the urban fantasy as one of the biggest shows of the last decade.

As season five was assumed to be the show’s last, the decision was made to split the latest release into two blocks of eight episodes.

This could very well account for the huge boost in ratings, as fans the world over were eagerly anticipating the show’s return, especially after the introduction of God (played by Dennis Haysbert).

However, Netflix made the surprise decision to renew the series for one more season later last year.

Now Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) has inherited his father’s powers, yet another shocking twist ending could draw an even larger crowd when the series comes back.

Filming for season six was completed earlier last year, so Lucifer enthusiasts are hopeful the series will return sooner rather than later.

Unfortunately, Netflix have yet to confirm a solid release date for the final ten episodes, so the audience could be waiting until the start of 2022.

It’s also unknown whether the final instalment will once again be split into two parts.

Amid the continuation of season five, Chris Rafferty recently spoke to Script magazine about Lucifer’s legacy and wrapping up the series with ‘a sense of peace’.

He explained: “I am hyper-aware of the audience’s attachment to these characters and get messages on the daily about wanting the show to last forever. But the world doesn’t work that way.

“All good things come to an end. And my number one goal going into season 6 was to be mindful of that. And to help the audience find some sense of peace by the time it’s over.”

Despite the show’s growing popularity, most fans will be pleased to see the series come to a satisfying end, rather than cutting the story short with more unanswered questions.

Viewers should also note that Netflix declined to release full viewing figures for their original programming, so it’s unclear just how many unique streamers tuned in to Lucifer’s new season.

Other popular drama series of the last year include the smash hit Bridgerton, which gained a whopping 82 million views as of June 2021.

However, it’s not certain where Lucifer fits in with the rankings, which also features the likes of The Witcher (76 million) and Stranger Things 3 (64 million).

Even so, the latest figures are nothing to be sniffed at, and Netflix will undoubtedly be surer than ever they made the right decision to continue the blockbuster series for one more year.

Lucifer Season 5, Part 2 is available to stream on Netflix.
