Pauley left the series after 15 seasons after reportedly falling out with her NCIS co-star Mark. Now Agent Gibbs has also left the team, the actress best known as forensic expert Abby Sciuto has shared some rare insight into the popular CBS franchise.

NCIS fans have been celebrating the long-running career of Special Agent in Charge Agent Gibbs after his departure during the 19th season of the popular series.

Gibbs eventually left the team after being demoted for improper treatment against a suspect, and finally decided to permanently retire from crime-solving.

As the latest instalment enjoys its midseason break over the holidays, some of former NCIS lead Mark’s old co-stars have weighed in on his impact.

Pauley revealed: “Abby is the only one who can crack back with him, like ‘Gibbs, you’re being crabby.’

“No one else would be allowed to,” she said, via TV Insider.

At the start of the series, Abby was just one of two of Gibbs’ colleagues who weren’t afraid of him, along with his friend ‘Ducky’ Mallard (played by David McCallum).

They had a father-daughter type relationship throughout the series, though that didn’t stop them from frequently butting heads with each other.

Gibbs tolerates her unconventional Gothic dress style thanks to her impressive work ethic.

However, that doesn’t stop him from cutting her off when she starts rambling, or Abby from telling her boss how it is when he’s out of order.

Despite their characters’ affection for one another, series regular Pauley departed the series after 15 seasons due to multiple alleged clashes between the actors on-set.

In her final episode, Two Steps Back, Abby doesn’t share the screen with Gibbs, instead saying her goodbyes to the rest of the team and sending her former boss a letter.

Mark was certainly one of the most dedicated members of the team, having been introduced with the original cast way back in 2003.

Agent Gibbs, along with Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), Abby and Ducky, all first appeared in two backdoor pilots in the mothership series JAG.

The team leader became by far the longest-running member of the cast, followed by Sean Murray’s Agent Tim McGee, who featured in a recurring role during the first season before being promoted.

He was even committed enough to base aspects of his performance on a real life NCIS agent, Richard Warmack.

Recalling an earlier interview with the star, Mark said to TV Insider: “Whatever I did as an athlete, a student, an actor, I worked at it.

“I love going to work. I believe in putting in the time.”

Gibbs briefly went behind the team’s back to hunt down a serial killer in his final run of episodes.

Although fans are keeping their fingers crossed for some one-off cameo appearances down the line, NCIS is set to carry on with new lead Gary Cole as Alden Parker in the new year.

NCIS season 19 continues Monday, January 3 2022 on CBS.
