Netflix fans convinced You is actually a sequel to Gossip Girl – and Joe is Dan Humphrey in 2018

NETFLIX series You has become a sensation since it's release on the streaming service on Boxing day -and now fans are convinced the psychological thriller is a sequel to Gossip Girl.

The ten-part series follows Penn Badgley's character Joe Goldberg, a bookshop manager who stalks a woman called Beck who he meets in his store.

Joe then uses the information he finds online in order to become the perfect boyfriend for the aspiring poet and writer, even if it means committing murder among other things.

And now viewers of the series have suggested that the show, which is based on Caroline Kepnes 2014 novel of the same name, is similar to Penn's previous TV role as Dan Humphrey in Gossip Girl.

Reacting to the similarities, one viewer penned on Twitter: "So I just watched the first ep of You and I'm confused about why they didn’t call it ‘Gossip Girl the sequel: xoxo Dan is still obsessed with blondes and being a literary snob but this time he’s way creepier".

"#YouOnNetflix is basically sequel to #GossipGirl if you really think about it," another shared. "After failing to make it as a writer & his divorce Dan Humphrey suffers a breakdown."

"Post asylum he changes his name, ghosts all his friends, starts working at a bookstore. And then there is Candace."

A third wrote: "#YouNetflix is basically gossip girl if Dan just went goddamn insane."

"Okay so I'm watching YOU on netflix, and penn badgley’s character Joe is basically the exact same as his character Dan Humphrey in Gossip Girl but wayyy more extreme lmfao."

"Dan Humphrey being total dark Humphrey in YOU series, it's like pov of gossip girl's scheming," another wrote.

While one concluded: "You on Netflix has Dan from Gossip Girl acting like a stalker so nothings really changed."

The actor, 32, played Dan for five years on The CW show, which is also based on a book series, opposite Leighton Meester, Chase Crawford and his ex Blake Lively.

His character was ultimately revealed as the person behind Gossip Girl in the final episode of the show when Dan gave his final chapter to Nate Archibald to publish in The New York Spectator.

In the piece, he confessed that he had only set up the gossip blog seven years prior in order to win over on/off girlfriend Serena Van Der Woodsen's affections.

The bizarre confession helped Lonely Boy win over affections, leading to them eventually get married.

Meanwhile, You has been such a hit with fans it's been given the green light for a second series.

You is based on the novel by Caroline Kepnes so it seems likely the second series will follow the sequel Hidden Bodies.

Set to drop in autumn 2019, co-creator Sera Gamble told Vanity Fair: "There's a lot of great material in the second book that we’re gonna do, starting with being in Los Angeles."

The second series will follow Joe as he makes a fresh start to hopefully find love but it will also delve deeper into his past.
