Professional dancer and Strictly Come Dancing star Oti Mabuse has announced an exciting new career move away from the iconic BBC competition. After joining the show in 2015 and lifting two Glitterballs in a row with actor Kelvin Fletcher and comedian Bill Bailey, Oti will be stepping away from the dance floor and onto the radio with her brand new Radio 4 podcast, Dancing Legends.
The new Radio 4 podcast for BBC sounds will look at some of the extraordinary people who changed the world of dance.
During the series, Oti is set to meet some of the most renowned dancing stars, from ballet sensation Misty Copeland to award-winning choreographer Matthew Bourne.
Oti will also be meeting some of her personal heroes including, South African dancer Kitty Phetla, Strictly Come Dancing companion Arlene Philips, and Strictly alumni Vincent Simone.
Each episode, Oti will take listeners through the inspirational lives of the dancers who captivated her guests and shaped their careers.
Listeners will meet the unique dancers who rocked, fashioned, and choreographed the dancing world as people know it today.
Speaking on her new adventure, Oti shared: “When I think of dancing, I can’t help but think of the dancers and choreographers who helped pave the way for dancers like myself.
“It’s been so great to get a snapshot into their lives and the legacies they’ve left behind. This series has it all!
“Music, interviews and the chance to hear me try out some of the iconic moves myself, let’s just say there are a few steps I will NOT be trying again!”
Oti Mabuse’s Dancing Legends will open up the dancing world and shine and like on those who chose to break moulds and break rule books.
The dancers who revolutionised the dancing world and pushed boundaries, making shows such as Strictly Come Dancing be possible today.
Oti will take a look across all platforms of dance styles such as modern, tap, and ballet to Latin.
Oti Mabuse’s Dancing Legends drops weekly from 12 January, broadcasting on Radio 4 and available first on BBC Sounds.
The podcast isn’t the only new project Oti worked on this year, as she also brought out her own children’s books to help kids learn some dance moves.
The synopsis reads: “It’s time for Oti’s dance class! Join Oti in her dance studio and learn ‘The Bird Jive’ in ten easy steps.
“There are lots of children in Oti’s dance class – and lots of feelings, too.
“Meet Fikile in her sparkly new shoes and Naira, who is SUPER excited to get started!
“Gan is feeling a little worried about joining in whilst Martin can’t wait to show his parents what he can do!
“But in the middle of their dance routine, an unexpected visitor disrupts the class.
“Not to fear, Oti is here! Soon they are back on track, getting ready for the performance of their lives.”
The Strictly Come Dancing finals airs tonight at 7:10pm on BBC One with John Whaite and Rose Ayling-Elli battling it out to lift the Glitterball.
