Claire and Jamie’s time-traveling love story started in Scotland when Claire passed through the stones at Craigh Na Dun. But after years of emotional and physical battles, the two sailed to the Colonies and started a new life. The last two seasons of Outlander took place in their North Carolina home in Fraser’s Ridge. But knowing their deep ties to the Highlands, fans wonder if the Frasers will ever return to Scotland.

Season 6 of ‘Outlander’ should follow the events of ‘A Breath of Snow and Ashes’
Outlander is based on Diana Gabaldon’s books. And so far, each season has loosely lined up with the storylines of the novels. Season 5 took on most of the events of book 5, The Fiery Cross, and a few from Gabaldon’s sixth book, A Breath of Snow and Ashes.
But as Galabdon fans know, the series has taken some creative licenses and altered some characters and storylines. For example, in the book series, Malva Christie becomes Claire’s apprentice, not Marsali. Murtagh, who died in the Battle of Culloden in the books, lived much longer on the TV series. And Brianna’s kidnapping ordeal and Stephen Bonnet’s death are featured much later in the timeline.
Claire and Jamie do go back to Scotland in book 7
In book six, Claire and Jamie’s adventures continue to unfold in the Colonies. But in the seventh novel, An Echo in the Bone, they travel back to Scotland to visit Jenny and Ian.
Considering season 5 of Outlander dipped into several storylines from the sixth book — including Brianna learning about her half-brother and Claire’s kidnapping — it’s possible season 6 will tap into the events of An Echo in the Bone. So, there is a chance fans could see Jamie and Claire sail back to Scotland when the show returns.
The ‘Outlander’ team promises something new for season 6
By now, Outlander fans know not to rely too heavily on the books for spoilers. The writers try not to make the show too predictable, so they add different elements to Gabaldon’s storylines.
However, at a PaleyFest panel for the upcoming season, showrunners Maril Davis and Matthew B. Roberts did reveal some details. Without giving too much away, they teased Brianna and Roger would face something “fun and new.” And they suggested a larger story arc is coming for Lizzie.
“Jamie and Claire, their love deepens,” Davis said, as reported by Deadline. “Roger and Brianna, they have their own journey… and Caitlin [O’Ryan], who plays Lizzie, has a great story, and she’s such a great actress.”
“There are going to be joys, there’s going to be a drama, there’s going to be suffering, there’s going to be tears,” Roberts added. “All of the above.”
Production on Outlander season 6 is currently underway. The STARZ series should return sometime in the latter half of 2021.
