BBC Breakfast: Jon teases Sally over $260k suit
Discussing the sale, Sally Nugent explained: “I bet you loved this when you were a kid. As film costumes go, John Travolta’s Saturday Night Fever suit is iconic, it has just sold for $260,000.”
Jon Kay teased: “I bought it… no, I didn’t. It is a white polyester three-piece. What more do you need, you can actually buy that actual suit featured in the 1977 film, as he took to the dancefloor there.
“Originally it cost $100 when the filmmakers bought it in a small menswear shop in New York, it is one of two suits Travolta wore on set.
“You can even apparently still see the sweat marks on it… you would have thought for that kind of money they would have given it a dry clean but no, or maybe you pay extra for the sweat.”
Disgusted by the notion, Sally quipped: “Ew sweaty polyester. I mean that’s really not… $260,000.”
They later revisited the story, where Sally branded the suit “fashion history” before Jon added: “It’s smelly as well. Travolta’s sweat stains come with it.
“It was originally bought from a small menswear shop for small men, in New York for $100 and now it sells for a quarter of a million dollars.
“You don’t buy a small man, you buy clothes for the small man, or maybe it is the shop that is small I don’t know.”

Sally sat next to her co-star with her hand covering her face as she tried to contain her giggles,” before Jon asked: “Are you alright?”
She reiterated: “$260,000 for a small suit,” before Jon looked Sally up and down and jibed: “I mean…” referring to her white jacket and nude-coloured trousers.
Her laughter quickly faded as she clapped back: “Oh stop! You went there!” before they moved on to Carol Kirkwood for the weather.
The suit was sold by Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles, with a spokesman for Julien’s explaining: “This suit is considered to be one of the most iconic costumes in cinema history.
“It is one of only two known to exist that was used during production. It has never been exhibited or sold at auction before.
“It has become emblematic of not only the film but of the whole disco era.”
The single-breasted suit jacket, waistcoat and trousers are made from 100 percent polyester, which also had exaggerated jacket lapels and flared trousers.
John Travolta’s character Tony Manero would often flip up the collar as a fashion statement, making the suit his own.
