Simon Cowell had his fans rather distracted as he appeared on this year's Royal Variety Performance – with some beginning a bizarre conspiracy theory suggesting he has been replaced by a 'lookalike'.

The star was on hand to introduce this year's Britain's Got Talent winner, stand-up comedian Axel Blake, who was up to perform.

In the royal box was Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

But fans were more distracted by Simon's appearance after he dissolved his facial fillers and said bye-bye to Botox earlier this year.

Taking to Twitter, one fan said: "It’s Simon Cowell look alike – Simon Cowell… #RoyalVarietyPerformance."

Someone else agreed: "Simon Cowell has now become a very cheap Simon Cowell lookalike."

As a third questioned: "Flicked over during halftime of the football and was that Simon Cowell or George Michael ordered from Wish on stage?"

It comes after Simon opened up about his cosmetic procedures in a candid interview.

Speaking to The Sun, Simon confessed: "There was a phase where everyone was having their faces pumped full of this and the other.

"There was a stage where I might have gone a bit too far. I saw a picture of me from ‘before’ the other day, and didn’t recognise it as me first of all."

It was enough to leave his son Eric "in hysterics", as Simon added: "Enough was enough. There is no filler in my face at all now. Zero.”

It comes after Simon admitted that Botox was "as commonplace as toothpaste" in his routine.

He told Glamour: "To me, Botox is no more unusual than toothpaste. It works, you do it once a year – who cares?”

And in 2019, in an attempt to live a healthier lifestyle when it comes to his skin, Simon underwent a '21st century facelift' which he admitted "hurt like hell".

Speaking about the £2,000 procedure, which involved sewing bioplastic-infused thread into his face, Simon said: "For me now, it’s all about having clean skin. If you have clean skin, you look better. But you have to be very careful with some of this stuff.

“There's lots of things you can do now. You don't just have to stuff your face with filler and Botox.

“It hurts like hell but it gets rid of sun damage and unplugs all the cr*p.”
