The official sneak-peek video includes some pop culture references as the titular hedgehog gets scolded by his human friend Tom Wachowski for playing Batman.
AceShowbiz -Paramount Pictures has given a sneak peek of one of its big movies coming in 2022. The studio has unleashed the first full trailer of “Sonic the Hedgehog 2“, the follow-up to its 2020 blockbuster “Sonic the Hedgehog“.
The trailer opens with Sonic getting in action on the street to stop a crime, only to cause a mess. In an apparent heart-to-heart moment with James Marsden‘s Tom Wachowski, the anthropomorphic blue hedgehog is scolded by the sheriff for playing a vigilante.
“Sonic, I love that you want to help make a difference,” Tom tells Sonic while the two are on a small boat in the lake, before pointing out that the titular character is “being reckless” and “pretending to be Batman.”
“You’re still just a kid. Trust me there will come a moment when your powers will be needed. But you don’t choose that moment, that moment chooses you,” Tom further advises his friend, who then replies, “I just got goosebumps. Wait a second, did you steal that from Oprah?” referencing Oprah Winfrey.
But that “moment” apparently doesn’t come too long as a sinister power is seen floating above the city with the return of Doctor Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey. He appears to eye “the source of ultimate power,” before the video introduces another new character, Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), an anthropomorphic fox who will soon become Sonic’s new friend.
Sonic is then seen having his first showdown with Knuckles the Echidna, voiced by Idris Elba. Seemingly unprepared for his enemy’s power, Sonic is easily knocked down, which seems to be a part of Dr. Robotnik’s plans.
In “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”, after settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.
With Jeff Fowler still serving as director, the sequel brings back Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, while Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell and Adam Pally are also returning. Shemar Moore is additionally cast in an undisclosed role.
The movie is set for an April 8, 2022 release in the United States.
