Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, or, whatever the third Tom Holland Spider-Man movie ends up being called, has been the talk of the town for months. One would be hard-pressed to find a more hotly-discussed blockbuster that fans know next-to-nothing about officially.
This is down to the more explosive rumors surrounding its casting and plot, namely that it will be a multiversal crossover starring Holland alongside Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Marvel and Sony haven’t made a peep about these specific rumors, but the return of Jamie Foxx as Electro and Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus certainly point to some sort of crossover with Spider-Man films of the past.
On the press tour for WandaVision, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige finally touched on the rampant speculation surrounding the film, which he said the company calls Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 to avoid confusion.
Kevin Feige touched on ‘Spider-Man’ rumors and MCU rumors overall
Feige doesn’t often give interviews. It’s understandable, considering his ever-increasing workload managing the entirety of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Whenever he does, it tends to be in the lead-up to big releases or at reveal events. Naturally, with so much time between interviews, he ends up hearing about all the rumors that have blown up in the press and fandom in the meantime.
Speaking with ComicBook.com, Feige was asked about the Maguire/Garfield rumors surrounding Spider-Man: Homecoming 3. He was, unsurprisingly, evasive about specifics, as he always is when asked about plot spoilers.
“I’ve read some things,” Feige said. “I’m not sure I’ve read all things. The fun thing about online speculation when it comes to our stuff is how sometimes it couldn’t be more off the mark and sometimes it’s shockingly close, and that’s held true for the last few years. But saying which is which would take all the fun out of everything.”
He did, however, emphasize the direction the MCU is headed in by pointing out the title for the upcoming sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. That film, directed by Spider-Man‘s own Sam Raimi, is said to tie into the story of WandaVision, hinting at widespread multiverse antics in Marvel’s near future.
A lot of names are being floated for the threequel
Aside from Maguire, Garfield, Foxx, and Molina, a whole host of names from the previous eras of Spider-Man have been rumored to appear. This includes Kirsten Dunst, who played Mary Jane Watson opposite Maguire in the Raimi films, and Emma Stone, who played Gwen Stacy alongside Garfield. The latter appearance has been called into question, however, as Stone’s recently confirmed pregnancy may have made scheduling unworkable.
Villains like Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman and Paul Giamatti’s Rhino have also been rumored, leading some to believe that the film will revolve around Spider-Man (Men?) taking on a multiverse-spanning Sinister Six. One of the splashier rumors also suggests that Willem Dafoe and Dane DeHaan will reprise their Green Goblin roles from past iterations of the series, alongside a new version of the character to complete the trifecta.
