The Crown fact-checked – Dodi’s proposal to Diana on night they died

The Crown season six teased in Netflix trailer

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from all seasons of The Crown

The Crown spends a great deal of time delving into the summer romance between Dodi Fayed (played by Khalid Abdalla) and Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) before their untimely deaths.

In one scene, on the fateful night before their death, Dodi got down on one knee and popped the question to the royal.

However, Diana turned him down saying she wasn’t ready for another marriage and knew how painful it could be if it wasn’t for the right reasons.

Diana even said they were just doing it to try and make his father happy rather than for them.

She told Dodi to be honest with his father Mohamed Al Fayed (Salim Daw) and admitted Diana had rejected his wedding proposal.

When Mohamed called, Dodi started off by saying an “agreement had been reached between two people” before cutting off the phone.

In the Netflix series, this would be the last time they spoke before Dodi and Diana were killed in a tragic car crash in Paris.

His father assumed this meant the couple were engaged to be married and told people as much.

Did Dodi propose to Diana on the night they died?

Speaking exclusively to Daily Express, historical expert Marlene Koenig said: “Apparently, the stories change over time, a few days before [the accident] they were over in Monaco and they went into the Repossi store and there was this diamond ring which was a ‘tell me yes’ ring in French.

“And he bought it as a present. Was he planning to propose? We don’t know.

“Of course, Mohamed Al Fayed came up with all these stories which were not true.

“So, [Dodi] allegedly picked up the ring in the Repossi Paris store the day of the car crash but it was not with him.

“It was said to have been found in his hotel room – and remember they had left The Ritz.”

Koenig went on to say there was also a Bulgari friendship ring, which Dodi was said to have given Diana, which she wore on her right hand. The historian added the Bulgari ring was “totally separate to this other ring”.

Much like The Crown depicted, Koenig confirmed: “Dodi didn’t have control over his own life.”

The author said: “So much of it has been concocted after by Al Fayed, ‘She was pregnant with Dodi’s child.’ No she wasn’t. That was verified by her friend Rosa Lawson.”

Moreover, Koenig stressed Diana was still in love with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Humayun Saeed) and “she was doing what she could to get his attention” hence her photos in the press in her leopard print swimsuit.
