Commander Nick Blaine (played by Max Minghella) was first introduced on the Hulu dystopian show as Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes), the humble driver. But after Nick’s recent promotion to Commander, fans predict his time at Gilead could come to a screeching halt.
In the most recent episode, titled Progress, June Osborne ( Elisabeth Moss) and Nick reunited at a safe house under the watchful eye of Mark Tuello (Sam Jaeger).
The pair had previously been secret lovers in Gilead, while June was a Handmaid for Commander Waterford and his wife Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski).
Nick had also been instrumental in helping June on her attempts to escape the Gileadean State.
With June now safe in Canada, it was her husband Luke Bankole (O.T. Fagbenle) who suggested Nick could help them search for their daughter, Hannah Bankole (Jordana Blake), who was still living in Gilead.
Nick agreed, which lead them to their reunion. June also brought their daughter, Nichole, who she had been forced to conceive for Serena Joy.
As well as providing June with pictures and the whereabouts of Hannah, the pair reminisced and even shared a kiss.
According to viewers, the location of where the two met – the Mary Magdalene Academy – foreshadows Nick’s death.
The episode contained some Christian scenery, as Aunt Lydia (Ann Doyd) eating with fellow Aunts, which is symbolic of the Last Supper.
One fan took to Reddit and compared the recent episode to the Bible: “This ep is leaning into the New Testament HEAVILY which is new.
“I believe, there have only been four references to the New Testament on the show prior: 1) “Love is kind” after Nick married Eden; 2) June’s prayer for the dead at The Globe; 3) In S1 Lydia quotes the bible and June finishes/corrects her and June gets tased; 4) The cross/Washington Monument.”
This fan believes June’s life in Gilead is reminiscent of the Old Testament, whereas her new life as a woman in Canada, gives a nod to the New Testament.
“Old Testament – Gilead: A wrathful vengeful God. 100s of Old Testament quotes and references in the show,” they said.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 4: Aunt Lydia’s fate ‘confirmed’ in spoiler [THEORY]
“New Testament: Is about love, charity, redemption, and forgiveness – for literary and fictional purposes, anyway.”
Another fan agreed: “Mary M was a prostitute before being saved by Christ and many consider her a feminist of her time.
“June is obviously the Mary Magdalene stand-in, both are “sinners” yet Christ never saw Mary M like that, Nick never saw June as a sinner.”
If this theory is correct and The Handmaid’s Tale does follow the biblical timeline, with Nick’s portrayal as Jesus, it could lead to his death.
Fans previously predicted Nick will meet his demise while helping to save Hannah before the recent episode was released.
With Nick agreeing to help save Hannah, one part of that theory has proved accurate.
Viewers will have to keep watching to see how far Nick will go to use his position as Commander to rescue Hannah and if he will indeed die in the process.
All episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale are available to stream on Hulu.
