The Handmaid’s Tale is back on Hulu for its fourth season, airing its fourth episode titled Milk on May 5. During the episode, Rita Blue (played by Amanda Brugel) was conflicted about her life and the decisions she has made. But what is next for Rita?
What happened to Rita?
Rita was originally a Martha serving the Waterfords before she was arrested and subsequently escaped to Canada.
In the first season she was just a secondary character but across seasons two, three, and now four, she has become one of the most important characters in the show.
In the latest episode Rita is faced with conflicting feelings about a couple she can’t protect after she spent her life looking after people like them.
Rita comes face to face with Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) during her visit to a detention facility, which Rita actress Brugel explains in an interview with tvline.com.
She said: “She recognizes Serena trying to weave her web of ‘I miss you, I miss our friendship,’ and the word ‘friend’ is like a dagger.”
She continues: “So while Rita is happy for her and happy for the baby, she slowly realizes that she’s been drawn back into this web and knows that finally she has the freedom to decide whether or not she wants to engage. And she doesn’t.”
So far in season four Rita has been exploring her newfound freedom and trying to find her place in this new life.
Rita is still adjusting, however, and is still battling the old life she used to have.
What will Rita face next?
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight Canada, Brugel gave fans a hint of what Rita will have to go through for the rest of season four.
“She’s struggling with the idea that she’s free and is supposed to be happy. But at the same time, she’s lost purpose,” Brugel said.
The actress added: “In Gilead, she had structure, she had a home. Now, she’s alone in Canada. Free, but void of any of the familiarities that she had, void of her job. So there’s a struggle this season with her.”
It’s clear the inner conflict Rita faced in last night’s episode will continue to build throughout the season as she tries to make sense of her new life.
Rita will have to face deadlier challenges than before, Brugel said fans “can expect a faster, higher, more aggressive pace this season”.
“I think that fans can finally expect a payoff for some of the people in Gilead to face punishment or to face what they’ve done to all these women.”
Season four is not even halfway through, so fans are just starting to get a glimpse of this payoff and Rita’s struggle.
There will be 10 episodes this season, maintaining the show’s tradition, with season five already being announced by Hulu.
Season five is expected to release next year, 2022, though currently, no details are surrounding the follow-up season.
It is unknown who will return for the next season, leaving the character’s fates up in the air for season four, including Rita’s.
The Handmaid’s Tale is available to watch on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.
