The Repair Shop’s Suzie Fletcher on leaving abusive marriage ‘without support’

The Repair Shop’s Suzie Fletcher addresses leaving abusive marriage

Suzie Fletcher was invited onto Wednesday’s instalment of Lorraine to open up about her volatile marriage to her ex-husband Rob.

The couple met after Suzie moved to America in her 30s and they tied the knot three months after she arrived in Denver.

However, their relationship became increasingly difficult for The Repair Shop’s Suzie due to Rob’s abuse.

“It’s really difficult with some people as everyone has their faults, but as I got to know him better I realised he was massively traumatised as a child,” BBC star Suzie told ITV viewers.

“That brought on some coping mechanisms which are not exactly healthy and he was using alcohol to help numb the pain, and I did learn as time went on how massively damaged he was.”

She said his “bad treatment” towards her “came from his own insecurities and his inability to cope with life”.

Suzie explained: “My circumstances were quite different as well because I’d moved to another country, I didn’t have the support of old friends and the family and things like that which can make a huge difference.

“We were good together, weirdly, but we did have this element which was not healthy and I am really interested in looking at why this occurs and to try and find a solution.”

Rob died following a battle with cancer in 2013, which was five years before Suzie’s debut on The Repair Shop.

Suzie, who was married to Rob for 15 years, said: “Sometimes if you can keep an open heart and love unconditionally there is always hope. I’d rather have hope and try to help a person than necessarily run away.”

Reflecting on her decision to join the repair shop as a leather expert, Suzie told Lorraine: “It’s really healthy for me to push myself out of my comfort zone.

“When this opportunity came my way, I thought I am going to be completely honest and talk about what happened.”

Suzie is not in a relationship at the moment, but she added: “I do love men but… You never say never. I have many lovely male friends.”

Lorraine airs on weekdays at 9am on ITV and ITVX.
