Negan (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) are still at odds in the latest episodes of The Walking Dead. As the final season of the popular AMC zombie series staggers on, with episodes also arriving on Disney+’s Star platform, fans have predicted a surprising change of heart for the two standing rivals.

Some fans of The Walking Dead believe an incredibly unexpected romance could be on the horizon in the post-apocalyptic drama’s final season.

Following some tense altercations between Negan and Maggie in recent weeks, their ongoing feud could eventually expose some unresolved sexual tension between the pair.

Of course, Maggie will first have to overcome their complicated history together, namely the fact Negan murdered her husband Glenn (Steven Yeun) a few seasons back.

One fan took the theory to Reddit after they claimed to have spotted some signs of attraction in the show’s latest episode, ‘Out of the Ashes’.

In a recent discussion thread, user MynameisntWejdene mused: “Maggie & Negan…

“I feel like the writers are going in a way that will be very unpopular.”

Other viewers seemed to agree with the theory, but many admitted it might turn them away from The Walking Dead if it does go down that route.

However, one fan argued a Maggie-Negan romance could be the perfect way to revitalise interest in the series.

They replied: “You say unpopular, I say popular. It’s risky, complex and kinda hot in a taboo sort of way.

“That just makes for good writing. Hardly stale s**t that we would expect from a lesser writer.”

If the series goes on as predicted, Negan and Maggie will most likely butt heads for a few episodes before finding common ground in time for the series finale.

As Alexandria prepares to take on the Reapers and uncover the Commonwealth’s secret, they’ll need to work as a team to ensure humanity’s continued survival.

Alternatively, a flirtation between the show’s iconic villain and the grieving widow of one of his innocent victims could make for strange yet compelling viewing as TWD gets ready to take its victory lap.

“But a sexual or romantic relationship, now that, considering their history is something HUGE,” the fan continued to speculate.

“And in many ways, realistic. This sort of thing happens IRL.

“Hate is such a strong emotion and with such strong feelings can come more complex feelings which can be terrifying and confusing.”

No one is expecting Maggie and Negan to start a devoted relationship with one another merely a couple of years after the latter brutally battered the former’s husband to death with a baseball bat.

Still, their intense rivalry could eventually lead to a night (or nights) of passion if these strong feelings eventually get the better of them.

With the show’s currently truncated schedule, there are only three episodes of TWD left before the series takes a midseason break.

Thankfully, season 11 has been given an extended order to wrap up the mainline series, so it will eventually return for another block, with a final eight episodes bringing the show to an end at some point next year.

The Walking Dead season 11 continues Sundays on AMC and the following Monday on Disney+.
