Yellowstone is expanding in ways fans have never seen before. With season four kicking off on November 7 on Paramount Network, it wasted no time setting up the prequel spin-off 1883. During the first episode, Tim McGraw cameoed as his spin-off character ahead of the season premiere. In a recent interview, the star explained the significance of the scene.

Season four has quickly got the plot moving again, picking up directly from the ending of Yellowstone season three.

While the main focus of the pilot episode was addressing the events seen at the end of season three, it was also setting up plot threads for the future.

One future plot thread actually concerned the series’ past, namely the prequel spin-off 1883.

The new show is set to release on December 19 and will explore the origins of the Dutton family ranch.

Set in the title year, 1883 will embrace the show’s western influences and bring together a new ensemble cast.

One such cast member is McGraw as James Dutton, one of John Dutton’s (played by Kevin Costner) ancestors.

This character will be fully explored in 1883, but the Yellowstone cameo sets up many of the themes that will bridge the two shows.

In the Behind the Story featurette for the season four premiere from Paramount, showrunner Taylor Sheridan explained: “We will explore the dawn of this legacy through the great character that Tim created.”

McGraw added: “That’s really a theme that passes throughout generation, generation, generation, all the way up through to the modern storytelling of Yellowstone.”

Monica Dutton star Kelsey Asbille continued: “Seeing these different time periods, you see that the problems that they’re facing are really relevant in any era.

“I think that’s really important,” Asbille added.

During the cameo scenes, James Dutton reluctantly works with the Native Americans that live on the land.

Rather than the two simply fighting one another, there is mutual respect between the two groups, though it is strained by the conflicts of the day.

This reflects the relationship between the Duttons and Natives in the modern timeline, revealing the significance of the cameo.

“There’s an existential conversation going on,” McGraw explained, adding: “Rather than just these two guys talking about why he wants to bury his father there.

“You start to see the honour that JD has, and I think the honour that carries through the Dutton family.

“He understands as a human what this means.”

It hasn’t been confirmed if McGraw will cameo in more episodes of season four, though he likely will play a major role in 1883.

It is also unconfirmed if any of the other main 1883 stars will cameo during the season, though Paramount Network will likely hold back from showcasing more ahead of the spin-off’s premiere.

Yellowstone season 4 airs Sundays at 8pm on Paramount Network in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be confirmed.

1883 will premiere exclusively on Paramount Plus on December 19 in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be confirmed.
