Anthony Sweat, the brother of Washington Football Team defensive end Montez Sweat, was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon near Richmond, Virginia, police said Wednesday.
He was 27.
Police said they received a call about a shooting around 4:09 p.m. on Tuesday, and that other people in the area had dispersed. Anthony was pronounced dead at the scene. It’s unclear what led up to the shooting.
Sweat was not at practice with Washington on Wednesday. Anthony’s death comes months after their mother died earlier this year.
"It is rough and our thoughts and prayers are with the families," Washington coach Ron Rivera said, via ESPN. "When we're here in the facility, we try to make sure the players understand that we're here for them."
The incident was the second related death to hit the team in recent days. Washington safety Deshazor Everett was involved in a single-car crash outside of Washington on Christmas Eve. The car that he was driving left the road and struck several trees before rolling over. The passenger, a 29-year-old woman, was killed. Everett was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. That crash is still being investigated.
Sweat has recorded 24 total tackles in 10 games this season, his third in Washington. He missed time after landing on Washington’s reserve/COVID-19 list and suffered a non-displaced jaw fracture last month.
Washington, coming off of a lopsided 56-14 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, will host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
"These guys are more than just robots. These are people,” Rivera said of his players, via ESPN. “They've got a teammate going through something right now. It's tough. That's not normal s***. That's real life."
