Horror moment workman gets foot trapped in moving escalator before firefighters forced to use 'jaws of life' to free him | The Sun

THIS is the horrifying moment a workman was cut free after his foot became trapped in a moving escalator.

Horror footage shows the man's mangled shoe caught in the side of a moving stairway at a shopping centre in Panama.

The worker, 40, was carrying out repairs when his foot got sucked into the right side of the escalator, pulling in his black trainers.

Part of his foot also became stuck and emergency workers raced to the scene in Paitilla, Panama City, to rescue him.

Firefighters used a kit of cutting tools and drills as they spent 30 minutes releasing the stricken workman's foot.

One team member held onto the man during the rescue mission to stop him losing his balance.

After he was finally cut free, the worker was given first aid by firefighters.

He was then taken to hospital where he was treated by medics.

It comes after a mum watched on in horror as her four-year-old son was "pinned" between an escalator and trolley at a supermarker.

The Kent mum, 42, said her boy suffered facial injuries, and skin was pulled from his shoulder amid the "scary" ordeal.

The mum, who has not been named, bravely recalled how her son had been standing on the moving staircase at Asda in Sittingbourne when a shopping cart fell on it.

The horror unfolded when another customer's trolley rolled backwards, seeing her fall and land on the four-year-old – with a fully loaded trolley on top of them.

Meanwhile, a man recalled how an escalator suddenly changed direction and sped backwards, hurling screaming commuters off their feet.

Brian LaFond threw himself over the side – desperately clinging on to the railing between the escalator and the one next to it, as the machine reversed "faster and faster".

Incredibly, only five people were injured in the incident at a train station in New Jersey, US, in 2013 – none seriously.
