SPOTIFY crashed on iOS today (June 8), leaving millions of music fans unable to open the app on their iPhones.
Several websites – including Amazon, Reddit and the UK government website – began having problems around 11am BST (6am ET), according to online outage tracker DownDetector.
Is Spotify down?
Spotify said they were investigating an issue preventing some of its users from accessing the music streaming app.
The Swedish firm acknowledged the outage just before midday, tweeting: "We're aware of some issues right now and are checking them out!
"We'll keep you posted."
As of 12:30pm, the app seemed to be working as normal.
The Spotify Status Twitter account is yet to confirm the problem has been resolved, though.
Are any other websites down?
Amazon, Twitch and Vimeo are also among a number of websites experiencing issues, according to users.
It's unclear what has caused the outage, though it's suspected that the fault lies with Fastly.
The data centre provider, which runs a service designed to speed up loading times for websites, crashed earlier this morning.
Its service requires it to sit between its clients and their users, meaning any wide-scale failure is likely to block visitors from their web pages.
On its website, Fastly says that it's currently investigating the issue, which it calls a "global disruption".
Others have suggested on social media that the outages may be the result of problems at Amazon Web Services (AWS).
AWS is a cloud computing platform that powers many of the world's most popular websites, including Amazon.
According to DownDetector, Amazon Web Services has also been hit by an outage this morning.
It seems some of the affected apps are able to work when Wifi is switched off.
Here's a list of websites that reported issues around the same time today:
- Spotify
- Twitch
- Amazon
- Stackoverflow
- PayPal
- Vimeo
- AWS
- eBay
- Shopify
- UK government website
- The New York Times
- The Guardian
- Bloomberg
How do I check if the apps are offline?
Users reported issues with both music streaming and log ins on the iOS app.
However, the Spotify web player and Spotify Android app both appear to be working as usual.
Turning off the iPhone's mobile data and WiFi allows the user to open the Spotify app in offline mode.
The user can switch WiFi on again to access Spotify's online features.
Alternatively, to continue listening to music while the app is down, Spotify users can use the open.spotify.com website on their iPhones.
When logging in, reject the option to open the app, and begin streaming music via the website.
When were the apps last down for some customers?
The last time Spotify crashed was on January 21, when the Spotify Status Twitter account acknowledged a problem.
TikTok has suffered a few technical difficulties in the past, with at least three outages accounted for in the year 2020, including:
- May 7 – Various users complained that their likes had reset to zero.
- May 27 – Down Detector reported the app had experienced technical problems.
- June 16 – Problems were detected on the app, including the disappearance of followers.
- July 9 – TikTok issues affected users in the UK, US and large parts of Europe
