MADISON Cawthorn has addressed a "crass" leaked nude video reportedly released by an opposition group campaigning against him in a Twitter statement.
The video, which surfaced on social media on Wednesday night, appears to show Cawthorn, 26, "acting foolish," as he described it in a tweet, ahead of the May 17 primary in North Carolina.
“A new hit against me just dropped,” Cawthorn wrote. “Years ago, in this video, I was being crass with a friend, trying to be funny.
“We were acting foolish, and joking. That’s it. I'm NOT backing down.
"I told you there would be a drip drip campaign. Blackmail won’t win. We will.”
The Charlotte Observer and CNN reported that an opposition group initially posted the video on their website before the clip surfaced on social media.

The Sun has not been able to independently verify the video and has contacted Cawthorn's representative for comment on Wednesday.
The news comes after the congressman addressed a number of recent controversies in an Instagram video.
In the caption, he wrote: "Every political advisor tells me to just ride out the storm.
"To not worry about responding to the news because I have 'such a large lead' and 'because you’re the incumbent' but I was elected exactly for the reason that I am a fighter."

It comes after photos of the congressman wearing a lacy top and bra were published, which he explained were taken during a cruise ship game "well before" he ran for Congress.
The GOP representative from North Carolina recently made headlines when a loaded handgun was found in his bag at a security checkpoint at the Charlotte airport.
In March, Cawthorn's interview on the Warrior Poet Society podcast also caused controversy when he made claims about “sexual perversion” in Washington, DC.
He alleged that DC lawmakers invited him to orgies and did drugs in front of him, claims that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy noted at the time "got a lot of members upset."
"I just told him he's lost my trust, he's gonna have to earn it back, and I laid out everything I find is unbecoming. And, you can't just say, 'You can't do this again,'" McCarthy told Axios.
TWITTER STATEMENT
Cawthorn released a lengthy Twitter statement on the matter.
It read: "Corruption and unethical activities exist in Washington. It's an indisputable fact. If you don't think that's true, you've not witnessed the Swamp."
"My comments on a recent podcast appearance calling out corruption have been used by the left and the media to disparage my republican colleagues and falsely insinuate their involvement in illegal activities."
The representative, who was elected to Congress in 2020 at the age of 25, said he considered how to respond to the controversy over his claims for several days.
"Compromising activities occur because when other people can place you in compromising positions, they control you," his statement continued.
"It's all about power, but my colleagues and I are fighting that corruption."
"Western North Carolina, you sent me to Washington to change the culture. If you want Washington to operate without accountability, send someone else.
"If you want someone who will throw the entire DC swamp into a meltdown because I call out the corruption – send me back."
