Motorboat ‘explodes’ before bursting into flames off North Wales as ‘two people are rescued from raging inferno’ that sends black smoke billowing towards beachgoers

A motorboat ‘exploded’ before bursting into flames off the coast of North Wales, with black smoke seen billowing out from a marina.

Police, fire service, ambulance and coastguard crews have all arrived at the scene at Conwy Marina, with a witness saying ‘two people were rescued’. 

Emergency services received a call at 5.56pm to reports that a 30ft motor boat, which had people onboard, had ‘exploded’. It is not yet known if there are casualties.

According to the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, there are currently four fire engines at the scene.

A spokesperson for North Wales Police has told people to be aware of an ongoing incident, saying that emergency services are in attendance.

The spokesperson added: ‘Please avoid the area so that the emergency services can carry out their work. 

One person on X, formerly known as Twitter, shared a picture of the fire and said: ‘Dramatic fire at Conwy Marina. Fear the worst for those on the boat.

‘Loud explosion occurred (like a cannon) before smoke and flames rapidly enveloped the boat. Marina staff quickly on hand and emergency services arrived.’

Another person wrote: ‘The boat named the Drum, sounded and felt like a gas tank explosion. 

‘Good response from other boat owners, rescued 2 ppl, and attempted to put fire out. 7 mins for fire, then RNLI, then ambulance then police. Fire extended to fisheries boat Lady Megan.’
