Owners of bulldog accused of making another dog behave aggressively

Owners of eight stone American bulldog who left girl, 17, ‘lucky to have arms’ by savaging her are accused of making another dog behave aggressively by ‘chaining it up in the garden for months’

The owners of an American bulldog who attacked a 17-year-old girl after going berserk at children in a park have been accused of making another dog behave aggressively by chaining it up in the garden for months.

Their dog – weighing eight stone and called George – had to be put down after terrifying locals in the picturesque village of in Thorpe Willoughby, near Selby, North Yorkshire, in May.

The teenage girl was bitten in the arms by George, while trying to restrain him from attacking children at a kids’ playground.

She lost control of the pet while taking him for a stroll just a day after George was rehomed by the previous owners.

Now the same family that owned George have been accused of cruelty to a large black dog called by leaving it alone and shackled in the tiny garden day and night.

Villagers have been left heartbroken by the dog ‘crying through the night’ after allegedly being kept chained up in its owner’s garden for the last five months.

They say they have bombarded the authorities, including the RSPCA, with complaints about the alleged cruelty but nothing has been done.

A neighbour reported that the dog – believed to be a Caine Corso, an Italian mastiff often used as a guard dog, called Nala – has broken down a garden fence while thrashing about on the chain

Residents who have launched a ‘Rescue Nala’ campaign on social media claim the dog ‘constantly whines and barks’ and is deprived of both shelter and human companionship.

They have repeatedly complained to the owner about his treatment of his pet but say he took no notice.

The row has blown up on social media with residents claiming Nala has been kept on a short chain since July.

They say it has only 30 minutes of human contact a day, when being fed and watered, and is the victim of ‘abuse by neglect’,

They are pressing North Yorkshire Police and the RSPCA for action, fearing the dog will not otherwise survive until the end of winter.

One post in support of the Rescue Nala campaign read: ‘This is a disaster waiting to happen. A good tug on the chain and the poor dog will be running in fear. Followed by an innocent person possibly getting stuck in front of a dog that’s been sent nuts by stupidity.’

And a neighbour of the family said: ‘I have heard it crying quite a few times and barking a lot. I am sure it is outside all the time.

‘Someone put some photos of the dog on Facebook.

‘It was out all bonfire night weekend while people were setting fireworks.

‘My dog would not even stay in the conservatory because it was that loud and flashing.

‘So, I cannot imagine what that dog went through. It must have been distraught with all the noise and it was going on for a couple of hours.

‘It has been ongoing now for months. Even neighbours have said ‘Did you hear the dog? it was crying all night’.

‘It is cruel really and it is only a small garden. So, it does not have a lot of room to move around. It really surprises me with the amount of people complaining about it that the RSPCA is not doing anything.’

Another neighbour said: ‘It is a nightmare. It is just left out night and day, all day every day, and in bad weather. It just barks, and barks, and barks and barks.

‘I was staying in my mum and dads’ room and you could hear it at 1.30am barking and barking. I wrote to Selby Town Council and they do not want anything to do with it.

‘As long as it is being fed the authorities do not seem to be bothered. It is a nuisance. There is a couple living in a nearby house with two kiddies and they are fed up to the back teeth. It just barks constantly.

‘People have tried to reason with the owner and he not been very nice about it. No one wants to do anything about it and it is quite a dangerous looking dog. It is a big angry looking thing and a bloody nuisance.

There was no reply from the property yesterday. The owners have been contacted for comment but have so far failed to respond.
