Parents and children in tears as teenage pupil dies after collapsing during school lunch break following 'concerns for his welfare'

CHILDREN and parents were in left in floods of tears after a teenage pupil died during lunch break at a school in wales.

The boy collapsed after falling ill at St John Lloyd Catholic Comprehensive School in Llanelli.

He was given first aid at the scene and taken to a hospital nearby, but sadly did not recover.

Parents of children who witnessed the “dreadful incident” were called to take them home.

One dad who lives close by said: “Children and parents were in tears when they were collected.

“It’s still a mystery as to what happened but for the pupils  who were there at the time it must have been a shock.”

A special assembly to tell children that the teen had died.

He had a younger sister at the school which has 500 pupils aged between 11 and 16.

A woman who works in the community said: “I’ve been told it was a dreadful incident but no one seems to know exactly what happened.

“Everyone is just thinking about the boy’s poor parents and sister at the moment.”

Pensioner Aeres Lewis, 87, who lives close to the school, said: “I could hear lots of sirens and I looked over towards the school.

“I knew something was wrong because all the children were out in the playground at 2pm and that’s very unusual.

“It’s terribly sad, it’s a very good school – my grandson went there.”

Dyfed-Powys Police said they were not releasing the boy’s name or details of how he died at the request of his parents.

Rob Evans, independent councillor for the Dafen Ward of Carmarthenshire Council, said: “It’s a tragedy – my thoughts are with the pupils and teachers who were with him.

“My sincere and deepest thoughts also go to the family – it’s beyond belief.”

"Tragically, we can confirm that the child has passed away in hospital. His family has been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and there is no need for other parents to be concerned for the welfare of their children.

"Our thoughts are with the family and the school at this time.

"St John Lloyd is working with the local authority, the diocese and Dyfed-Powys Police in order to ensure pupils and staff are supported."
