Family IDs Boulder victim as ‘beloved’ 25-year-old
The 25-year-old woman killed in the Colorado supermarket massacre was a “dedicated” employee who had worked in the store throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, her family told The Post.
Rikki Olds, 25, of Lafayette, was working as an assistant front-end manager when she died in the shooting rampage at the King Soopers location Monday in southern Boulder, her grandmother told The Post.
“She loved her job, to be truthful with you that’s probably what killed her,” her grandmother, Jeanette Olds, said.
“She wouldn’t run. You are taught to take care of your customers, remove them from harm and especially with her being a front end-manager to lock the front doors.”
Jeanette said that Rikki was “very dedicated” to her job with the supermarket chain, which she had joined shortly after her high school graduation.
“She enjoyed working with people and working in the public,” her grandmother said.
“She was always looking out, always thinking about the other person instead of herself,” she added.
Jeanette said that she had a close relationship with Rikki since she raised her after her mom left her and her two siblings.
But her granddaughter’s job kept them apart for most of the past year since she had been working on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I couldn’t see her. We had only phone contact because of my age. She was afraid to come and visit,” she said.
But Jeanette had received her second shot of a COVID-19 vaccine a couple of weeks ago, allowing her to see Rikki who came over again recently.
“The last time I had talked to her was Saturday. It was my birthday,” Jeanette said.
“She was working and said she would come by this week but wanted to wish me a happy birthday and that she loved me.”
One of Rikki’s roommates contacted Jeannette on Monday, fearing that she had been in the shooting at the grocery store.
Jeanette contacted the police, but it wasn’t until 3 a.m. that they received confirmation that Rikki had been among the ten people killed in the rampage.
“It’s very hard, unbelievable. It’s like a dream, not even a dream — more like a nightmare,” she told The Post. “She was an incredible person.”
Police said the gunman, who was injured in the shooting, is now in custody.
They have only officially identified one of the ten victims, officer Eric Talley.
Talley, 51, who had been with Boulder police since 2010, was the first officer to arrive after reports of shots fired and someone carrying a rifle, authorities said.
