Accused killer and New York real estate heir Robert Durst was hospitalized for an unspecified medical issue amid his murder trial in California on Thursday, his attorney said.
Durst’s murder trial, which has been ongoing since mid May, was adjourned because of his sudden medical episode behind bars, where he’s being held pending the outcome of the trial.
“He was taken to the hospital this morning. We have very little information about his condition,” his attorney, Dick DeGuerin, told The Post in an email.
Durst, 78, was diagnosed with bladder cancer prior to the trial and has appeared in the Los Angeles court room in a wheelchair throughout the proceedings, which are set to resume Monday.
He’s accused of gunning down his longtime confidant Susan Berman at her Los Angeles home soon before Christmas in 2000.
Durst, the one-time heir to a vast real estate fortune in New York, allegedly executed Berman to ensure she wouldn’t reveal information she had about him killing his ex-wife, Kathie Durst, in 1982, prosecutors allege.
Durst has pleaded not guilty.
His attorneys acknowledged he found Berman’s body at her home in the Benedict Canyon section of Los Angeles.
During opening statements of the trial, which was postponed for more than a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, DeGuerin stressed there is little evidence linking Durst to the slaying — and that the burden of proof lies on the prosecutors.
“The evidence isn’t there,” he told jurors. “Bob Durst did not kill Susan Berman, and he does not know who did.”
Prosecutors have painted him as a homicidal recluse, who killed his ex-wife, Berman and later his neighbor in Texas, who had found out his identity and attempted to blackmail him.
