By the letter of the law and its own anti-carbon principles, the Biden administration should be imposing sanctions on the company building the Nord Stream 2 natural-gas pipeline and its CEO, but it’s is waiving them because . . . well, because.
The pipeline linking Russia to Germany without going through Ukraine serves the Kremlin’s interests, and CEO Matthias Warnig is a Vladimir Putin crony. The Germans want it, too, but even the European Parliament is opposed, since it gives Moscow new leverage over Berlin while also helping it strangle Kiev.
President Joe Biden’s long said he’s against it, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken this month told the BBC, “We think the pipeline is a bad idea. It advances Russia’s interests and undermines Europe’s interests and our own. It actually goes against the very principles that the EU has set out in terms of energy security and not being too dependent on any one country, notably, in this case, Russia.”
And yet, Biden is going to . . . just let Putin & Co. have it. Axios reported last week that the State Department is skipping the sanctions in the name of (unnamed) US interests. If this was the Trump administration, most of the media would be screaming that the president is in Putin’s pocket.
Adding insult to injury, one of the president’s first acts in office was to nix the Keystone XL pipeline, killing thousands of US jobs and infuriating Canada.
Who knew that Biden’s “Build Back Better” meant putting Americans out of work while enriching the nation’s enemies?
