HOUSE Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy coined a new term “Pelosi Republicans.”
McCarthy’s remarks on July 26, 2021 were in response to a committee created to investigate the Capitol attacks earlier in the year.
What are 'Pelosi Republicans'?
On Monday, July 26, 2021, Kevin McCarthy called Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinziner “Pelosi Republicans” after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi turned down McCarthy’s picks to serve on the investigative committee for the January 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection.
McCarthy was asked in the Rose Garden of the White House about the appointed panel to investigate the attack.
Before the event to celebrate the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, McCarthy responded, "Who is that? Adam and Liz?
"Aren’t they kind of like Pelosi Republicans?"
Reporters asked McCarthy if he would somehow punish Cheney and Kinzinger for agreeing to partake in the investigation and he responded, “We’ll see.”
What did Liz Chaney and Adam Kinziner say about the remark?
Before a preparation session for a hearing on Tuesday, July 27, 2021, Cheney was asked about McCarthy’s comments.
“I think that’s pretty childish,” Cheney said.
“We’ve got very serious business here,” she said. “And we’ve got important work to do.”
Kinzinger also described McCarthy's comment as "childish."
"We’re doing big things right now. We’re getting to the answers of the worst attack on the Capitol since the War of 1812. He can call me any names he wants, Kinzinger said.
"I’m a Republican. Kevin McCarthy is technically my Republican leader. And to call, you know, members of Congress by childish names like Donald Trump used to do, I guess it’s just kind of par [for the course].”
Steny Hoyer, House Majority Leader, called McCarthy’s remarks “absurd.”
What does President Joe Biden think about the investigative panel?
According to White House press secretary Jen Psaki, President Biden is onboard with Pelosi’s selection of Republicans to investigate the Capitol riots, according to The Hill.
"His goal is the same goal that Speaker Pelosi has, which is to get to the bottom of what happened and prevent it from happening in the future," Psaki said.
"And he trusts her leadership to do exactly that."
