Are you suffering with menopause misery? These women reveal how a natural supplement helped their symptoms

October marks Menopause Awareness month.
For the majority of women, the menopause can hit unexpectedly. Recent research shows that many pre or perimenopausal women feel unprepared or blindsided by it and one in two admit they didn’t know what was happening to them.
Often, women who are at the peak of their careers when perimenopause and menopause strike feel the most thrown off course.
There’s no one-size-fits-all menopause experience, but more than 75% of women experience menopausal discomfort, and a quarter describe it as ‘severe’
For others it can coincide with looking after small or teenage children, juggling the responsibilities of family life, which can add to the feelings of stress and brain fog.
There are 15.5 million women currently going through menopause in the UK. It’s an issue that’s going to affect half the population, so not something to be swept under the carpet.
There’s no one-size-fits-all menopause experience, but more than 75% of women experience menopausal discomfort, and a quarter describe it as ‘severe’.
This can vary from night sweats to hot flushes, brain fog, disturbed sleep, anxiety, irritability and depression, to name a few.
Providing a natural alternative to supporting women through the menopause led Dr Max Gowland PhD, founder of the Prime Fifty range of nutritional health supplements, to investigate.
Menopause Support has been formulated specifically for women going through the menopause
He researched how innovations in food supplements could help individuals over 50 (but also younger) to maintain the necessary levels of nutrients to support their changing bodies. This resulted in the introduction of Menopause Support, one of the Prime Fifty range of supplements, aimed at women going through the menopause.
Fifty-one year old and mother of three grown-up boys, Wendy Fisher, certainly appreciated the science behind the supplement.
Wendy has a busy life managing a shared office space in Newcastle part-time, as well as supporting her family. She explains why she started taking Menopause Support around two years ago.
‘My sister is six years older than me and I saw her struggle with the menopause.
‘I didn’t know when it would hit me but I wanted to be ahead of the game as there’s a history of illness in the family, so I decided to go with a natural option rather than a hormonal one. That’s when I started taking Menopause Support.
‘I’ve been taking two-a-day before bed for a good couple of years now. I wanted to do something positive before I fully entered the menopause, by giving my body all the essential nutrients it needs. It certainly seemed to help me and I like the fact that it can also be taken with other therapies should I wish to pursue additional support in the future.’
Neha recommends Prime Fifty’s Menopause Support to her clients as a Nutritional Practitioner
Nutritional Practitioner, Neha Deol explains the importance of having natural alternatives to support the menopause.
‘For many women in Menopause, HRT is not an option, although it’s been proven beneficial. This can be for various reasons. The good news is there are things that can be implemented to ease symptoms so it doesn’t mean they have to be uncomfortable.
‘I have seen time and time again in my clinic that a smart selection of supplementation alongside a healthy lifestyle really does help support women with menopause symptoms. Prime Fifty’s Menopause Support is a supplement I recommend because it uses specially formulated ingredients for women during the menopause who are looking for natural support.’
In order to help women navigate their way through the often confusing path of menopause, Prime Fifty has joined a collective of responsible brands and companies, led by GenM. The organisation’s mission is: to improve the menopause experience for all.
The Gen-M Invisibility Report points towards a lack of preparation, knowledge or education on the menopause and its symptoms, with around half of women confessing they know almost nothing about the menopause before they started going through it.
Every woman’s experience of menopause is different – but there’s no reason why it should stop women living their lives to the full.
Around a million women in the UK use some form of support to manage their menopause, according to the National Institute of Care and Excellence (NICE).
‘Alternative therapies, including cognitive behavioural therapy, may also improve hot flushes, nights sweats and other menopausal symptoms and can be considered in women who do not wish to take HRT or have contraindications to taking HRT,’ advises the British Menopause Society.

One of the issues is many women are not sure at what stage they should start taking a supplement to help with the menopause.
‘Although everyone is different,’ explains Dr Max, ‘the average age of menopause is 51, and many women start perimenopause five years before that.
‘This is when women’s oestrogen and progesterone levels start to drop off and many women can experience symptoms such as brain fog, fatigue or loss of muscle tone. At the same time, bone density can decrease and cardiovascular issues increase.
‘That’s why our supplement includes important replenishing nutrients that women going through the menopause will need.’
Deon describes Menopause Support as her ‘sunshine tablet’ after it helped alleviate her symptoms such as joint pain and tiredness.
That was certainly the case for 57-year-old Deon Bryan, from West Yorkshire, who works for the NHS and Local Health Authority. She calls Menopause Support ‘my ‘sunshine tablet’.
‘I suffered badly with many menopause symptoms, including being very tired and experiencing joint issues. I’m less tired and it has relieved all the other indicators. My vitamin D is always low due to being a black Caribbean woman but I had that checked recently and it was at normal levels and it’s never been at a normal level.’
51-year-old Lorraine also decided to give the supplement a try after seeing Dr Max talk about it on television.
‘I’m 51 and stopped my periods around six months ago. I’m fit and well and exercise daily however, I’d been getting daytime flushes – several times, three to four per day and night sweats, several times a night which was badly affecting my sleep and my general wellbeing.
‘I’ve been taking Menopause Support now for three months and for me, four to six weeks in, the flushes and sweats have significantly reduced – virtually to none. I’m feeling myself again so I’ve stocked up!’
Dr Max explains some of the benefits of the supplement.
‘It provides calcium and vitamin D, which help to reduce the loss of bone mineral in postmenopausal women. Low bone mineral density is a risk factor for osteoporotic bone fractures.
‘The menopause can also affect skin and hair, due to hormonal changes. Menopause Support contains vitamin A, biotin, selenium and vitamin C, which contribute to normal hair and skin, and this can positively affect women’s confidence.

‘Plus, the decrease of oestrogen levels affects the lipid metabolism. This means that the ‘protection’ women have against cardiovascular issues is gone.
‘Not many people are aware that menopausal women have the same risk of having cardiovascular problems such as heart attacks and strokes as men.
‘That’s why we’ve included vitamin B1 in this supplement, which contributes to normal functioning of the heart. It also includes B6, B12 and folic acid which contribute to normal metabolism of homocysteine, another key molecule involved in cardiovascular health.
‘I founded Prime Fifty with the goal of making supplements specifically for the over fifties. There’s no silly dosages, unlike many supplements, because of the rigorous research and nutritional data that goes into developing the formulations. With Menopause Support, while it clearly supports many women over 50, it also helps younger women too.’
Heather Jackson, co-founder of GenM says: ‘We’re really pleased to have Prime Fifty on board as one of GenM Partners. Menopause is a societal issue that impacts us all directly and indirectly. Our mission is to empower brands to play their part in helping women navigate this unchartered territory in their lives, giving them the support they need to make informed choices on what will suit them best.’
Menopause Support carries GenM’s menopause-friendly symbol, the new ‘M-tick’. The symbol is designed to clearly demarcate products and services that support menopause symptoms that women can experience, helping them take control of their menopause.
Dr Max concludes: ‘Menopause Support is enriched with absorbable minerals which support normal gut absorption as you age. The tablets can easily slot into your daily routine, as you only have to take them once a day with a glass of water or milk at any meal. It’s an easy way to introduce extra nutrients and minerals into your diet at a time when your changing body may need it the most.’
