Audiences have found the ‘crater scene’ in All Quiet On The Western Front gruelling — and director Ed Berger reveals that it reduced some of the crew to tears, too.
Berger said that his British cinematographer wept during the four days it took to film the scene, in which Paul Baumer (Felix Kammerer) encounters a wounded French soldier during trench warfare in World War I.
‘I started hearing a noise,’ Berger said. ‘Eventually, I realised that Danny, my cinematographer, was crying.
‘He had been brought up by his grandfather, who himself grew up during World War II, hating the Germans.
‘But somehow, watching this, Danny had a powerful realisation that we are all the same.’

Netflix’s All Quiet On The Western Front is a 2022 epic anti-war film based on the 1929 novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque.
Star Felix Kammerer recently revealed he was thrilled when he discovered the German war film received 14 BAFTA nominations.
With its impressive stack of nods, the critically-acclaimed film equalled a record for the non-English language film holding the most nominations in BAFTA’s history.
It has since gone on to become an Oscar frontrunner as well, earning nine Academy Award nominations.
The Austrian actor, who plays German soldier Paul Bäumer, reacted to the amazing news on Instagram.
Felix penned: ‘Thank you BAFTA!!! This is amazing! Congratulations to the best director @eeedwardberger, the most wonderful @lisychristl29a and amazing @h.merker and of course to my partner in crime @albrecht.schuch and the whole fanatastic team of this movie. See you in London.’
Among its 14 nominations, All Quiet On The Western Front received nods for Best Film, casting, costume design, editing and cinematography.
Albrecht Schuch has also been nominated for Best Supporting Actor while Edward Berger was recognised for Best Director.

It was also nominated in the Film Not In English Language category, where it is up against the likes of Corsage, Decision To Leave, The Quiet Girl and Argentina, 1985.
Its other nods were for make-up and hair, original score, production design, special visual effects, sound and for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Meanwhile, Germany’s submission to the Academy Awards, earned not only recognition in the Best International Film category but a total of nine Oscar nominations overall.
Those nods include Best Picture, as well as Best Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Original Score, Visual Effects, Sound, Makeup & Hairstyling, and Production Design.
