The ‘Cocoa Butter Kisses’ rapper unveils that he is dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder after watching his friend get killed in front of him when he was a teenager.
AceShowbiz –Chance the Rapper has opened up about his mental health issue. In a new interview, the “No Problem” rapper revealed that he has a “lot of dark days” as he’s currently suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The 28-year-old rapper spoke out about mental health in a candid interview for “Peace of Mind With Taraji“. In a clip from the upcoming episode titled “Why Black Men Don’t Cry with Chance the Rapper”, he told Taraji P. Henson, “Obviously I deal with PTSD, I saw my friend killed in front of me when I was 19 and I’ve seen people I didn’t know get killed too.”
“You become kind of numb to it, like somebody else died last week but it stays with you, you know what I mean?” Chance, whose real name is Chancelor Johnathan Bennet, continued. “And you don’t realize until later — like I have lasting effects.”
Elsewhere in the episode, Taraji asked Chance if mental health was a topic of discussion in his household. To this question, the “Cocoa Butter Kisses” rapper replied, “Wellness wasn’t something that we knew, you know?”
“There’s probably a ton of situations where people you know, we just wrote them off as crazy, or like they was tweakin’ but they were actually going through a chronic mental health disorder,” Chance explained. He added, “I feel like this is something that we’re all, as a mainstream, we’re starting to be like, ‘OK, yeah health is beyond just our physical.’ “
The revelation came after he shared concerning Instagram post back in June. At that time, he got candid about feeling a little down. Over a plain black background, he wrote, “Feeling overwhelmed and overextended. Will take prayers, encouragement and patience.”
After receiving words of encouragement from his fans and followers, Chance posted updates on his Instagram Story to let people know that he got better. “All good thanks for the love just gonna lay down for the rest of the day and start over tmw [praying hands emojis],” he wrote in one post. He added in a separate Story, “Thanks for the encouragement and prayers. I GOT UP! Went to work. And now I’m going back to sleep.”
