Brian May, 74, has led tributes on Instagram to Tory MP David Amess, 69. The 69-year-old was attacked at Belfairs Methodist Church while holding one of his regular constituency surgeries.

I fear this country is truly falling to pieces.

Brian posted a lovely picture on Instagram of the pair along with a sincere message.

He said to his 2.9 million followers: “So shocked and sad that our great friend and ally David Amess has tragically lost his life, his future, his family, his work, his dreams (seen here supporting our Save-Me campaign to save Britain’s hedgehogs).

“This man was gentle, amiable, a great supporter of the rights of both humans and animals, and, behind his friendly smile, a man not afraid to speak his mind, his truth … which is increasingly perilous in these troubled days.”

He added: “I fear this is the terrible price he paid. Heartfelt condolences to his family, his friends, his colleagues. And we are all the poorer, here in England.

“I’m so very sorry to all who knew him and all the work he did for animal welfare.”

David sadly passed away after a knifeman walked into Belfairs Methodist Church in Essex and the horrendous attack began.

Police have confirmed he tragically passed away at the scene.

Eastwood Road North in Leigh-on-sea has been closed between Bellhouse Lane and Oakwood Avenue while police respond to the attack.

In a statement, Essex Police said: “A 25 year-old man was quickly arrested after officers arrived at the scene on suspicion of murder and a knife was recovered.

“He is currently in custody. We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.”

David had been an MP since 1983 and was married with five children.

He is the second serving MP to be killed in the past five years, following the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox in 2016.

She was killed outside a library in Birstall, West Yorkshire, where she was due to hold a constituency surgery.
