English-French star Jane Birkin died while alone overnight for the first time in almost two years.

New details about the 76-year-old’s death reveal that she wanted to get back to a normal life and regain independence after her health battle.

Before passing, Jane expressed her wish to spend Saturday night by herself, instead of having carers in her home.

A statement from her family, released on today, reads: “Jane Birkin passed away after 16 years of a fierce battle with illness.

“Since her stroke in September 2021, her family and wonderful caregivers had been by her side day and night.

“For a few days, she had been walking again, and was motivated by rescheduling her Olympia performance.

“The first evening alone turned out to be her last. She had decided it.”

The statement, obtained by Evening Standard, also confirmed that she died of “natural causes”.

The latest details were released by her manager Olivier Gluzman on behalf of her daughters, Charlotte Gainsbourg, 51, and Lou Doillon, 40.

The actress was diagnosed with leukaemia in the late 1990s which, she said, didn’t cause her much pain at the time.

This was followed by more health issues, including a mild stroke in 2021, which put a halt on her performing.

Most recently, Jane cancelled some of her Paris concerts in May due to her health.

In a statement at the time, she said: “I’ve always been a big optimist, and I realise that it still takes me a little while to be able to be on stage again and with you.

“I love being with you so much.”

Tributes flooded in for Jane on social media following her death, including one from President Emmanuel Macron.

He tweeted: “Because she embodied freedom, because she sang the most beautiful words of our language, Jane Birkin was a French icon.

“A complete artist, her voice was as sweet as her engagements were fiery.

“She bequeaths us tunes and images that will never leave us.”

The mother-of-two was best known for her sexually explicit hit in Je t’aime… moi non plus in 1969.

She was also the inspiration behind the luxury Birkin handbag.
