Monty Don was in attendance of BBC’s Gardeners’ World Live at the weekend. The one-off outdoor event is held annually and gives fans who are seeking inspiration a chance to get first-hand advice from the gardening expert.

The 66-year-old took to Twitter and shared some news in view of his 238,000 followers.

The Gardeners’ World favourite quickly reacted to a disgruntled social media user who admitted they were “disappointed” after attending the live event.

It comes after Monty tweeted: “I am at GW Live today giving talks in the floral marquee at 11.00, 2.00 and 5.00. If you are there too, come along.”

The person in question admitted they were left unimpressed by the visitors not wearing masks.

They penned: “We came to see you. Couldn’t get near for the crowd of unmasked onlookers…

“Maybe a raised stage would have helped anybody under 5ft 6? Disappointing to be honest.”

Monty reacted to the tweet as he claimed there appeared to be a “laissez faire” attitude towards wearing masks at Gardeners’ Live which was held at Birmingham NEC.

“Oh dear. The stage was raised a couple of feet, but perhaps not enough. Yes, there seemed to be a laissez faire masking policy,” Monty replied.

Face coverings are no longer legally required in England but other parts of the UK have different rules.

Businesses can also set their own rules for customers.

There is less of a requirement to wear face masks at outdoor events but coverings were previously used to slow the spread of coronavirus.

Social media users shared their delight about the live event, as one gushed: “We’re just heading home now, had a fantastic day and loved hearing all about Longmeadow.”

Another commented: “A fantastic day today at #GardenersWorldLive. Loved your talk about Long Meadow.”

Elsewhere, the horticulturalist attempted to reassure a fan after they pleaded for his help.

Sharing a photo of their garden, the follower emotionally wrote to Monty: “@TheMontyDon I’m in trouble with my wife to be as we get married in our garden next month and now our little wild meadow strip looks like this. I’m excited for its future but it’s not washing with her I’m afraid.

“Any words of comfort you could offer my fiancé? Her name is Lorna.”

Monty did not hold back as he offered the harsh truth to the social media user.

He responded: “Looks ideal for sowing wildflower seed. Not sure I would have done this just before getting married in the garden though…

“However, should look passable in a few weeks and great next spring.”

Although the horticulturist is known for his love for gardening, he admitted he hated it for 10 years of his life while growing up.

Speaking at The Edinburgh Literary Festival, Monty said: “You would think I have gardening in my blood and I drew upon it from my mother’s milk, but nothing could be further from the truth.

“I hated gardening as a child, I loathed it.”
