Piers Morgan has taken aim at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in his latest column. It comes after the Duke of Sussex is reportedly set to launch legal action, saying it’s “unsafe” for him and his family to return to Britain without the protection of police bodyguards.

The Duke of Sussex has offered to cover the cost meaning that the British taxpayer would not have to foot the bill.

Harry, 37, who lives in America with his wife Meghan, 40 and their two kids Archie and Lilibet said it is unsafe to enter the UK without specialist police protection.

It has been reported that the Duke has urged the Home Office to provide the family with protection.

The Duke of Sussex has since argued that his current private protection team at home in the US does not have adequate jurisdiction abroad or access to UK intelligence information which is needed to keep his family safe from harm.

His concerns follow an incident in summer 2021 when the paparazzi compromised his security and chased the Duke of Sussex after a charity event.

Harry’s legal representative said: “Prince Harry inherited a security risk at birth, for life. He remains sixth in line to the throne, served two tours of combat duty in Afghanistan, and in recent years his family has been subjected to well-documented neo-Nazi and extremist threats. While his role within the Institution has changed, his profile as a member of the Royal Family has not. Nor has the threat to him and his family.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex personally fund a private security team for their family, yet that security cannot replicate the necessary police protection needed whilst in the UK. In the absence of such protection, Prince Harry and his family are unable to return to his home.”

Piers has shared his thoughts over Harry’s demand, branding the royal “shameless”.

The broadcaster claimed that the Duke should have not “ditched” his royal duties.

He argued that the couple can no longer be entitled to police protection in the UK.

Writing in The Sun, he said: “And they’re even more desperate to keep all the good stuff that comes with being a royal – like police protection when they’re in the UK.

“There’s just one problem with this: they’re not entitled to it.”

He continued: “Only active royals who do their duty on behalf of the British taxpayers deserve that kind of protection, not runaways who’ve deserted their duty.

“Harry and Meghan aren’t real royals anymore, they’re just another pair of Hollywood celebrities on the make.”

Piers went on to claim that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have “exploited” their royal status to “make as much money as fast as possible”.

Prince Harry and his family had lost their taxpayer-funded security when they left the Royal Family in 2020 and moved to the USA for their new lives.

Piers had also addressed the topic on BBC’s Sunday Morning alongside Sophie Raworth.

He told the broadcaster how the timing of Prince Harry’s request for police protection is “so appalling” following the death of The Queen’s husband, Prince Philip, last year and the “awful situation” with Prince Andrew.

He added: “Now, her grandson who has been baiting the Royal Family and the monarchy all year, has now popped up from his mansion in California to say that when he comes back to the UK, he wants to have the British police protect him!

“Sorry mate, that is not how this works!”
