The Truth About Midwin Charles

MSNBC legal analyst Midwin Charles passed away at the age of 47. Charles’ death was announced by her family on her personal Twitter account. The statement said, “It is with a profoundly heavy heart and the deepest sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved Midwin Charles. She was known to many as a legal commentator on television but to us she was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, niece and cousin. Our lives are forever changed and we will miss her for a lifetime.” The family has yet to disclose the cause of her death, however, they asked for time to grieve the loss of Charles.

Charles is best known for her work as a defense attorney and legal analyst. She has frequently appeared on MSNBC and worked as a legal contributor on CNN’s In Session. Charles provided regular commentary on topics ranging from law to politics to pop culture for HLN, TV One, and Bloomberg TV. Charles was also a guest host for the New York radio show Express Yourself, as well as a contributor to Essence magazine and the Huffington Post. One of Charles’ most noteworthy accomplishments was founding her law firm, Midwin Charles & Associates LLC. Charles often used her status to help other aspiring lawyers to achieve success.

When news broke that Charles had passed, many of her co-workers and friends were shocked and paid tribute to her online. MSNBC’s Joy Reid shared a photo of the pair on Twitter and captioned it, “Midwin dear heart, you were a brilliant spirit and beautiful soul. You were such a blessing. I’m just stunned, and have been since I learned of this today. Blessings to your mom and family. To all, please live every moment like it’s your last, and OVER-appreciate your friends.”

Sunny Hostin, who worked with Midwin on CNN’s In Session, also took to Twitter to express her grief. She wrote, “She was a brilliant beautiful legal mind. I will miss her and am praying for her family and especially for her mother whom she adored and spoke of so often. Rest my dear friend.” Journalist Elie Mystal Tweeted, “It’s hard to express my sadness about the sudden passing of @MidwinCharles. We have lost a true warrior for justice today. I didn’t get to know her for very long, but I am so enriched and lucky to have known her at all.”
