Why is James Corden leaving the Late Late Show and who will replace him?

James Corden shocked his fans in April 2022 when he revealed he was leaving the Late Late Show.

The presenter, 44, is leaving the CBS programme following eight-and-a-half years of interviewing hundreds of celebrities, including in his famous carpool karaoke segment.

The Gavin And Stacey screenwriter will host The Late Late Show for the final time on Thursday with two final special guests.

Speaking on The Drew Barrymore show in January about leaving the show, James admitted, ‘I will be a mess on that last show.

‘I will cry my eyes out but I will know at my core that the best thing for me and the best thing for us as a family is to put down some roots in London, and it feels absolutely right in every single way.’

So what is the real reason behind James’s departure from his beloved programme? And who will step up to replace him?

Moving on: The presenter has said he will be ‘devastated’ to go – but what is the real reason behind his departure?

Why is James Corden leaving The Late Late Show?

James, who earns $36million per year, is returning home to the UK to be closer to his family members.

The actor revealed during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show that a conversation with his son Max was what lead him to quit the late-night talk show and move his family back to the U.K.

‘I was filming on a Sunday and I came downstairs, it was about six a.m. and my son, who was ten at the time, was sat on the stairs and he said, “Are you working today?” and I said, “I am.”

‘He said, “I thought, well it’s Sunday,” and I said, “I know buddy but this schedule’s just all over the place.

‘We just got to get it done because we only have a tiny amount of time before we have to go back and do the show,” and his face just kind of dropped,’ Corden said.

‘I got in the car and I called my wife Jules and I said, “I’ve realized, best case scenario we have six more summers where Max is like, even remotely wants to be around us and I cannot waste another one,”‘ Corden explained.

‘So, really the choice was to go, “Well if I really want to do this other work, that cannot be at the expensive of our children, our family,” and that is really all it comes down to,’ Corden added.

James has three children, Max, 11, Carey, eight, and Charlotte, five, with his wife Julia.

Who is in line to replace him?

It has been reported that the Late Late Show, as it is known, will itself end when James leaves the show.

But CBS will be rebooting the Comedy Central game show @midnight in its place, Deadline reported in February.

Stephen Colbert, who hosts CBS flagship late-night talk show The Late Show, will reportedly be producing the revival.

However, Chris Hardwick, who hosted the original @midnight, is not expected to have a connection to the upcoming show.

Bigger workload: The Late Show host Stephen Colbert with reportedly produce @midnight, along with Funny or Die, which produced the original; seen in January 2022

Left behind: Comedy Central aired @midnight from 2013–2017 with comedian Chris Hardwick hosting. Hardwick, who was accused of sexual abuse in 2018, will reportedly not be involved with the reboot

When is the final episode of the Late Late Show?

Who are the final guests on the Late Late Show?
