As Harry and Meghan ‘choose Oprah as godmother’ – here are the other bizarre celebrity godparents to A-listers' kids

OPRAH Winfrey has been tipped to be godmother to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby girl.

Both Harry and Meghan had remained tight lipped about two-year-old Archie’s godparents – but insiders have told the chat show queen is in the running for their second baby which is due this summer.

Pal Omid Scobie suggested Oprah was in the frame, saying: "If one of those godparents is Oprah – and I’m not saying that she is – then you can understand why perhaps they want to keep that to themselves.

"Because even Oprah sitting down to interview them was controversial enough in itself.”

The pair are said to be keen to reward Oprah for their earth-shattering interview in March.

The source told Heat World: "Meghan thinks Oprah would be the perfect godmother for her daughter.

“She wants her girl to be surrounded by strong female role models, and Oprah certainly fits the bill.

“She’s been a real support to both her and Harry since they moved to California, and Meghan knows she can rely on her, no matter what."

But they are not the only famous couple to choose superstars to look after their little darlings.

From the Beckhams to the Jolie-Pitts, we check out the kids with A-lister godparents.

Joan Collins and Cara Delevingne

Supermodel Cara, 28, has 16 godparents and one is the 87-year-old Dynasty actress.

Cara’s posh parents Pandora and Charles chose so many in case some of them die, Joan once quipped.

Joan has given Cara – who starred in Suicide Squad and Valerian – priceless acting advice.

She told her goddaughter: “Just learn your lines and be as honest as possible."

The Beckham Boys and Elton John… and Liz Hurley

The Beckhams never underestimate star power and certainly didn’t while choosing godparents for their offspring.

The two oldest Beckham boys Brooklyn, 22, and Romeo, 18, have not one but two megastars for their godparents.

Both Elton John and Liz Hurley are godfather and mother to the two brothers.

Younger siblings Cruz, 16, and Harper, nine, have Latin singer Marc Anthony and actress Eva Longoria as godparents.

Macauley Culkin and Paris and Prince Michael Jackson

Culkin became friends with late pop star Michael Jackson after starring in Home Alone in 1990.

Eccentric Michael made 17-year-old Macauley godfather to his daughter Paris, now 23, and later to his son Prince Michael too.

Paris and Macauley got matching tattoos of two tiny spoons on their forearms in 2017.

A year later Culkin told how he is fiercely protective of Paris: “I’m going to warn you now, I am very protective of her so just look out.

“I am a very open book when it comes to things but like with her, she is beloved by me.”

Michael Jackson and Nicole and Sofia Richie

The King of Pop Michael was chosen by crooner Lionel Richie to be godfather to his daughters reality star Nicole and model Sofia.

The girls would spend time at Michael’s Neverland Ranch as children and Michael would be invited to the Richie’s for family gatherings.

Sofia said: 'I remember, when my parents were still together, I walked into their room and Michael was wearing a sparkly jacket.

“I was like, "Why are you wearing my mum's jacket?" Everybody died of laughter.'

Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus

Country star Dolly was made godmother to Miley after working with her dad Billy Ray Cyrus.

And Dolly convinced the singer to make her godmother when Miley was born in 1992.

She said: “We just kind of gelled, 'cause we're both country kids.

“We had a lot of fun just talking about that.

“And then when Miley came along, I said, 'She's got to be my fairy goddaughter'."

Bono and Knox and Vivienne Jolie-Pitt

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt made sure their twins Vivienne and Knox, both 12, had charitable godparents.

They chose Irish rocker Bono who founded anti-poverty campaign One and AIDS charity RED.

This chimed with Angelina who works with refugees as a UN Goodwill Ambassador.

Just weeks after the twins were born, Brad and Ange reportedly flew out to U2 legend’s mansion in the south of France to ask him to be godfather.

Steven Spielberg and Gwyneth Paltrow… and Drew Barrymore

The director has not one but two leading ladies as his goddaughters.

A six-year-old Drew Barrymore asked Spielberg to be her godfather when filming E.T.

Gwyneth’s late father Bruce was best friends with the director for more than 30 years.

Gwyneth said the director filmed her 2018 wedding to Brad Falchuk: “He definitely has videoed me over the years and he was actually, you know, the only person who was videoing at my wedding.”

Elton John and John Lennon's son Sean

Beatles member John Lennon chose Elton John as godfather for his son Sean in the seventies.

The pair performed together at Madison Square Garden in 1974 – a year before Sean was born.

But after John and Elton lost touch when the Beatle got back with Yoko Ono after briefly leaving her for another woman.

Elton told Sean last year: "After that and then you were born, I really didn't hear or see your dad at all and I didn't mind because you know what, he was so happy being back with your mum.”

Drew Barrymore and Frances Bean Cobain

Courtney Love and tragic Kurt Cobain were the best of friends with Drew Barrymore in the early nineties.

So when Frances Bean was born in 1992 they asked Drew and REM frontman Michael Stipe to be godparents.

But in 2007 Drew told how she had drifted apart from both Courtney and Frances.

She said: “Courtney and I have not seen each other in a while, so I haven't had the pleasure of being in Frances's life for a few years.

“That's a great loss for me, and I hope to reconnect with her."

Sting and Rocco Ritchie

Madonna and director Guy Ritchie were reportedly introduced by Sting’s wife Trudie Styler in 1998 at their London pad.

The same year Guy had convinced Sting to feature in his film Lock, Stock.

To thank the couple, they made them godfather and godmother to their son Rocco, now 21.

They attended Rocco’s lavish and starstudded christening in the Scottish town of Dornoch in 2000.

Simon Pegg and Apple Martin

Unlikely friends Chris Martin from Coldplay and actor Simon Pegg have been pals for years – with Chris giving a cameo in Shaun of the Dead.

When Apple was born in 2004, Chris and Gwyneth Paltrow asked Simon to be godfather.

Pegg said: "I'd like to think I'm a really great, fun godfather.

"It's much more interesting than trying to be a good influence on her. I'm a comedian — it's what they expect."

In return, Simon made Chris godfather to his daughter Matilda who was born in 2009.

Tom Cruise and Max and Emme Anthony

Jennifer Lopez first met Tom Cruise at his 2006 wedding to Katie Holmes.

Although their marriage didn’t last, J.Lo’s friendship with the actor has.

She asked Tom to be godfather to her twins with Marc Anthony, Emme and Max, now 13.

At the time, Tom was reported to have spent over £100,000 on presents for the twins including a fish tank for their nursery.

Gok Wan and Honey Wood

When Ferne Cotton and Jesse Wood’s daughter Honey was born on pal Gok Wan’s birthday it made sense to make him godfather.

The presenting pair are fast friends and Ferne revealed Gok even made her cry while pregnant with a sweet picture he drew.

She wrote: “As I'm rather emo at the moment I cried. Woops.”
