I’m a speech expert & there are three things I’d never do with my baby – sucking their thumb sets them up for problems | The Sun

A SPEECH expert has revealed the three things she'd never do with her baby.

Macy Gilson, who is from the US, took to TikTok and shared an informative video where she begins: "I'm a paediatric speech language pathologist so I thought it'd be fun to share some things I wouldn't be doing with my child because of my profession."

The first thing the expert notes she'll be doing is keeping her son as best she can from sucking his thumb.

"Thumb sucking can lead to a complete change in the oral anatomy," she explains.

"It can change the palette, the teeth…and those things can have a long term effect on speech development."

She continues: "The next thing that I will not be doing is repeating words back to him incorrectly that he may say."

I’m a 20-year-old mum…people want to be my friend until they see my parenting

"For instance if he says 'baba' for bottle I will not repeat 'baba' back to him. I'll repeat the adult form which is 'bottle.'

I can still use my mum voice and make it fun, but I will be saying the correct form of the word – and the same goes for sentence structure and grammar as well."

Finally, she notes she won't be placing any unnecessary speech and language demands on her baby.

"Things like 'what's this? Who do you see? Say ball'…I won't be doing any of those things."
